There is no rules-backed universal “most powerful” Bard/Rogue split. The right build depends on your rules edition, campaign level, permitted books, and whether you want stronger spellcasting, Sneak Attack progression, or a balance of both. For the popular College of Swords/Swashbuckler pairing, first confirm that your table allows Xanathar’s Guide to Everything and establish which edition’s class rules you are using.
Set the rules package before choosing a split
This article uses the revised 2024 Bard and Rogue class rules to explain the decision points. The 2024 Player’s Handbook was released September 17, 2024; Wizards of the Coast says its revisions are designed to work with existing fifth-edition play. That compatibility does not automatically settle which older subclass rules a particular table permits.
College of Swords and Swashbuckler are listed as options in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, not as a subclass pairing supplied by the cited 2024 Player’s Handbook source. Ask your DM which books and subclass versions are allowed. If you are using the 2014 class rules instead, follow that edition’s multiclass and spellcasting rules rather than mixing class tables from different editions.
Meet the multiclass prerequisites
Under the 2024 Basic Rules, multiclassing into or out of a class requires a score of at least 13 in that class’s primary ability. Bard’s primary ability is Charisma and Rogue’s is Dexterity, so a Bard/Rogue needs Dexterity 13 and Charisma 13. The 2024 multiclass rules also distinguish features gained from each class: you earn them according to your level in that class, not your total character level. Check the Bard and Rogue rules for the applicable class features and multiclass proficiencies.

Choose what the character is meant to do
Pick the job first, then compare the class levels needed to reach its important features. Every level invested in one class delays features in the other; the class tables do not award both classes’ next milestones just because your total character level increased.
- Spell-forward: Favor Bard levels if access to Bard spells and Bard feature progression are the priority. A Rogue dip delays those milestones.
- Rogue-forward: Favor Rogue levels if Sneak Attack and Rogue features are central to the character. Sneak Attack scales with Rogue level, so Bard levels slow its progression.
- Weapon-focused hybrid: Decide which class’s milestones you are willing to delay. A subclass pairing may support a particular style, but the multiclass still trades away timely features from both classes.
These are trade-offs inferred from the class tables, not a published damage ranking. The official rules sources do not establish a universally optimal split or provide a controlled comparison of candidate builds.

Plan around the campaign’s level range
A split should be judged at the levels the campaign is likely to reach, not only as a finished character at some later level. Compare what each class level gives you along the way, since a feature that arrives after the campaign ends cannot help that character during play.
| Milestone | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Bard 3 | The 2024 Bard table grants the subclass. |
| Bard 5 | The 2024 Bard table grants Font of Inspiration; Bard spell-slot and prepared-spell progression also follows Bard level. |
| Bard 6 | The 2024 Bard table grants a subclass feature. |
| Rogue 2 | The 2024 Rogue table grants Cunning Action. |
| Rogue 3 | The 2024 Rogue table grants the subclass and Steady Aim. |
| Rogue 5 | The 2024 Rogue table grants Cunning Strike and Uncanny Dodge; Sneak Attack progression is tied to Rogue level. |
| Rogue 7 | The 2024 Rogue table grants Evasion and Reliable Talent. |
Use these as checkpoints, not a ready-made split recommendation. For example, if a planned endpoint is close to one of these thresholds, compare the value of reaching it against the Bard or Rogue features postponed by taking levels in the other class.

Check subclass timing and action economy
For Swords Bard/Swashbuckler, make sure both subclass options are permitted and use the correct versions for the table’s rules package. Then map when each subclass feature becomes available against the campaign endpoint. The rules do not make subclass names alone enough to establish a best split.
Also look at what you expect to do on a typical turn. Rogue bonus-action options, Bard abilities, spells, and subclass features can compete for limited turn resources. A build that looks attractive on a level chart may feel different if its preferred tactics repeatedly require the same action or bonus action. Check each feature’s actual text in the allowed sources and decide which options matter most to your character.

Know when Sneak Attack can happen again
Under the 2014 rules clarification, Sneak Attack is limited to once per turn, not once per round. The official Sage Advice Compendium answers “Can a rogue use Sneak Attack more than once per round?” with “Yes.” Because another creature’s turn is a different turn, a qualifying opportunity attack can provide a route to Sneak Attack again in the same round if the feature’s requirements are met. Treat this as a 2014 rules clarification; consult your table’s rules text for the edition and options in use.

A practical way to choose your progression
- Confirm the edition and sources. Decide whether the character uses 2014 or 2024 class rules, and ask whether the table permits the relevant Xanathar’s subclasses.
- Write down the endpoint. Use the level the campaign is expected to reach as the comparison point.
- Rank your priorities. Choose whether Bard spells and features, Rogue Sneak Attack and features, or a hybrid role comes first.
- Mark desired milestones. Compare the class levels needed for the specific features you want with what taking the other class delays.
- Check your turn plan. Make sure the spells, bonus actions, and subclass abilities you value can work together in the way you expect.
- Recheck the result with your DM. Confirm the permitted books, feature versions, and any table rulings before locking in a progression.
