You need 15 correctly placed bookshelves to unlock the strongest standard enchanting-table offer, which requires player level 30. The table counts at most 15 active shelves, so adding more will not raise the offer’s level.
How many bookshelves do you need for level 30 enchantments?
Use 15 bookshelves. A mechanics reference lists the level-30 requirement in the table’s bottom offer slot when 15 shelves are active; the CurseForge guide likewise says that 15 correctly arranged shelves unlock the full level-30 enchant pool. CurseForge’s enchanting-table guide and the SAS Gaming Wiki mechanics reference support the standard count. More than 15 active shelves do not increase the maximum.
How to place bookshelves so they count
Leave a one-block gap between the enchanting table and the shelves, and keep the relevant gap clear. The mechanics reference describes the valid area as two blocks away along one horizontal axis, up to two blocks along the other, with shelves at the table’s height or one block higher.
- Place the enchanting table with room around it.
- Arrange 15 bookshelves in the nearby valid area, leaving one block between each shelf and the table.
- Keep the intervening gap as air. This is the simplest arrangement across editions.
- Open the enchanting interface and check whether the strongest offer requires level 30. If it does not appear, confirm the shelves are in range and no blocks obstruct the gap.
Java and Bedrock obstruction differences
The editions do not use identical obstruction checks. The mechanics reference says Java can allow certain replaceable blocks in the checked space, while Bedrock requires air in the relevant spaces. Because the exact obstruction rules differ, leaving the gap empty avoids relying on a block that might count in one edition but not the other.

What the level-30 offer costs
Level 30 is the minimum player level required to select the strongest offer; it is not 30 levels spent. The CurseForge guide says selecting it costs three XP levels and three lapis lazuli. The displayed enchantment is a preview, not a guarantee that no additional enchantment will be applied.
Scope of the bookshelf count
The standard maximum of 15 is consistent in the cited guide and mechanics reference. Those sources do not establish an authoritative version-by-version range, so this count should not be read as a claim about every past or future Minecraft version.
