Use attacks that bypass that mechanic instead: area damage, instant kills, splash or non-physical attacks, and lobbed projectiles. EA confirms the Jester can deflect or juggle “appropriate plant projectiles”; the specific counters below come from community guidance, not an official EA loadout.
Why the Jester Zombie is hard to beat
The Jester Zombie can turn some incoming plant projectiles back against your plants. EA described the mechanic in its version 7.3.1 update announcement, which says it “deflects/juggles appropriate plant projectiles.” That makes ordinary straight-line shots a risk: they may help the zombie rather than damage it.
Players often call this enemy “the clown,” but the name alone does not identify it with certainty; Plants vs. Zombies 2 also has other clown-themed material and variants. If the enemy you mean looks different, a screenshot or the level name would help pin it down.
What attacks to use against it
Community references recommend choosing attacks that do not rely on the kind of projectile the Jester reflects. Examples include:

These are community-suggested counters, not an official EA list. Plant availability and level restrictions vary, and the guidance should not be taken to mean that every interaction is identical in every game version. For the categories and examples, see the community Jester Zombie entry.
How to choose a counter for your level
- Check the level’s plant options. Pick from plants you can actually bring or unlock for that stage; a counter is no help if the level rules exclude it.
- Prioritize attacks that avoid reflected shots. Use area damage, instant-kill effects, splash or non-physical attacks, or a lobbed attack rather than relying on a stream of ordinary straight-line projectiles.
- Support your attackers if the level allows it. Defensive plants can give damage dealers more time to work, but the right formation depends on the stage layout and its rules.
Dark Ages Night 5: a stage-specific setup
For Dark Ages Night 5, one community guide recommends placing a column of Laser Beans or Snapdragons behind Wall-nuts or Tall-nuts, with Fume-shrooms as supporting attackers. This is a setup for that particular stage, not a universal formation for every Jester encounter. See the Dark Ages Night 5 guide for that level’s recommendation.

What if those plants are unavailable?
Use the same principle with whatever the stage permits: avoid relying on projectiles the Jester can deflect, and favor attacks that reach it through another damage pattern. EA’s Plants vs. Zombies 2 feature page describes the game’s broad plant-selection and Plant Food gameplay, but it does not prescribe a Jester-specific strategy.
