To prevent an opponent from lowering your stats in Pokémon, use a blocking Ability, Mist, or—in some cases—Substitute. Mirror Armor reflects certain drops back at their source. The right counter depends on which stat is threatened and how the effect is caused; Haze is a reset, not protection, and can remove your own boosts.
First identify what is lowering the stat
A move or Ability can change a stat stage during battle—for example, by lowering Attack or accuracy. That is different from a status condition changing how a stat functions. Paralysis-related Speed reduction is not a stat-stage drop, so blocking stat drops does not necessarily prevent it. A Generation IV guide specifically notes that Clear Body and White Smoke do not stop paralysis’s Speed reduction.
Also check whether the effect comes from an opponent or from your own Pokémon. The protections below are chiefly useful against qualifying effects from other Pokémon; they do not generally prevent a Pokémon from lowering its own stats.
Choose a defense that matches the effect
| Defense | What it does | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Clear Body or White Smoke | Blocks qualifying stat-lowering effects from other Pokémon, according to a Generation IV Diamond/Pearl guide. | Does not block every kind of stat reduction; the guide specifically says paralysis’s Speed reduction still applies. |
| Hyper Cutter | Protects Attack from qualifying drops, according to the same Generation IV guide. | It protects Attack, not every stat. |
| Keen Eye | Prevents accuracy from being lowered, according to the same Generation IV guide. | It protects accuracy, not other stats. |
| Mist | Temporarily prevents stat-lowering moves from lowering your side’s stats. The cited Generation IV guide gives a five-turn duration. | It is temporary. A move that would cause a drop can still be used; its stat-drop effect is what fails. |
| Mirror Armor | Reflects certain stat-lowering effects from moves or Abilities back to their source. The official Sword and Shield site identifies it as Corviknight’s Hidden Ability. | It reflects rather than simply nullifying the effect; exact interactions can depend on the game. |
| Substitute | Can shield its user from certain external stat-altering moves, as described in the Generation IV guide. | It does not stop every effect or a self-inflicted drop. |
The detailed notes for Clear Body, White Smoke, Hyper Cutter, Keen Eye, Mist, and Substitute come from Smogon’s Generation IV Diamond/Pearl guide; do not assume every interaction works identically in every Pokémon game.

How Mirror Armor works in Sword and Shield
In its official Sword and Shield Corviknight profile, The Pokémon Company International describes Mirror Armor as bouncing back stat-lowering effects from moves or Abilities. This makes it a useful example of a reflection-based defense: the drop is redirected to the source rather than simply erased. Mirror Armor was introduced in Generation VIII, and Corviknight has it as a Hidden Ability, according to the community-maintained Bulbapedia entry.
Why Haze is not a way to protect your boosts
Haze clears stat-stage changes for every Pokémon on the field, including both boosts and drops. It can undo an opponent’s setup, but it also removes your own positive stat stages. Use it when resetting the field is acceptable—not when you need to preserve your boosts or stop future drops.

Pick the counter by asking four questions
- Which stat is at risk? Hyper Cutter and Keen Eye are narrower defenses; Clear Body and White Smoke are broader in the cited Generation IV guide.
- What is causing the change? Distinguish an opponent’s move or Ability from a status condition such as paralysis.
- How long must protection last? Mist’s protection is temporary; an Ability is not a five-turn field effect.
- What should happen to the effect? Mirror Armor reflects certain drops, while Haze removes stat stages from both sides.
For a specific game, check that game’s Ability and move descriptions: the cited Generation IV mechanics guide and the official Sword and Shield Mirror Armor page cover different generations, so their details should not be treated as a universal ruleset.
