An empty village will not refill just because its houses or beds are still there. Bring in two villagers or cure zombie villagers, then give the pair suitable food and enough valid beds to breed. The exact mechanics can vary by edition and game version, so avoid relying on old advice about doors or fixed distances.
Choose a way to get villagers there
Either route can establish a population. Pick the one that fits what you can access and protect.

These are practical trade-offs, not a guarantee that one route will be faster. The Minecraft Wiki’s village-creation tutorial discusses transport and setting up a village; its zombie-villager curing tutorial covers the cure process.
Move villagers from another village
Transport two villagers to the empty village using a boat or minecart, then keep them in a secure area while you prepare beds and food. Choose a route and enclosure that reduce the chance of villagers wandering off or being attacked.

Cure zombie villagers
- Secure the zombie villager under a roof or otherwise protect it from sunlight and hostile mobs.
- Apply Weakness using a supported method, such as a Splash Potion of Weakness.
- Use a golden apple on the weakened zombie villager.
- Keep it protected and wait several minutes for the conversion to finish before moving it or exposing it to danger.
The curing tutorial describes several possible places to encounter zombie villagers, including igloo basements and zombie villages, but spawn details can vary by edition and version. Check the mechanics for the game you are playing rather than treating every spawn note as universal.
Set up beds and food so villagers can breed
Once you have two villagers in the target area, prepare the village for the population you want. Beds, not leftover doors, are the relevant foundation in the post-Village & Pillage mechanics described by the sources. Mojang’s 2019 Java Edition Village & Pillage announcement says village detection is based on beds, job sites, and meeting points instead of doors.

- Place valid beds. Provide unclaimed beds for the additional villagers you want. The beds need to be reachable, with sufficient clear space above them for babies. Exact reach and pathfinding behavior can differ by edition and version; no universal distance or clearance number is established here.
- Give the villagers suitable food. The village-creation tutorial lists bread and crops including carrots, potatoes, wheat, and beetroot as foods involved in making villagers willing to breed.
- Protect the area. Keep hostile mobs away while the villagers establish themselves and breed.
- Allow time. Breeding is not an instant refill; leave the pair in a safe area with food and bed capacity.
Job-site blocks can support village routines and professions, but the available sources do not establish workstations as a universal prerequisite for breeding.

- Houses and beds alone do not create villagers. You need to bring villagers in or cure zombie villagers to start a population.
- There may be no bed capacity for babies. Check that additional beds are available and that villagers can reach them.
- The beds may not be usable. Obstructions or insufficient space above beds can prevent them from functioning as intended.
- Old door-based instructions may not apply. The Java Village & Pillage update changed village detection away from doors; exact behavior still depends on edition and version.
- Villagers may be unsafe. Hostile mobs can interrupt your attempt by attacking the pair or the zombie villager you are curing.
If the setup appears correct but nothing happens, first identify whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and note the game version. The sources do not establish every edition-specific distance or pathfinding rule, so avoid assuming that a number from an older guide applies to your world.
