Microsoft advertises up to 40 hours from AA batteries in the standard Xbox Wireless Controller. The Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 also has a manufacturer rating of up to 40 hours, but per charge from its built-in rechargeable battery. Those are maximum specifications, not a guarantee of how long your setup will last.
Standard Xbox Wireless Controller: up to 40 hours with AA batteries
Microsoft’s current Xbox Wireless Controller listing says its AA batteries provide “up to 40 hours of battery life.” That is Microsoft’s advertised upper limit, not an independent test result or a promised runtime for every pair of batteries.
The standard controller uses AA batteries by default. Your own runtime depends on the batteries and how you use the controller, but Microsoft’s listing does not quantify the effect of particular AA brands, rechargeable AA cells, vibration settings, or headset setups. If you need a personal estimate, track how long your own batteries last across a few normal play sessions.
How the Elite Series 2 differs
The Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 specification lists an internal rechargeable battery rated for up to 40 hours per charge. Xbox says battery life varies with usage and other factors. This is a different power arrangement from the standard controller’s replaceable AA batteries; its figure should not be used to estimate the runtime of an AA-powered controller or a separate battery pack.

Power options for the standard controller
For the standard Xbox Wireless Controller, you can use AA cells or buy Microsoft’s Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C separately. The product listing identifies the accessory but does not specify its runtime. The practical choice is about how you prefer to manage power:
- AA batteries: Swap in another pair when the current ones run down. Rechargeable AA cells can also be used if you prefer cells that work in other devices.
- Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C: Use an installed rechargeable pack rather than swapping individual cells. Microsoft’s cited listing does not establish its runtime, charging time, or long-term cost compared with AA batteries.
Available Microsoft specifications do not establish which option lasts longer in use, costs less over time, or has greater battery longevity, so there is no supported runtime-based winner.

What “up to 40 hours” means
Both 40-hour figures are manufacturer specifications, but they describe different products: AA batteries in the standard Xbox Wireless Controller and one charge of the Elite Series 2’s internal battery. “Up to” signals a maximum rather than a typical or guaranteed duration. For the Elite Series 2, Xbox explicitly notes that usage and other factors affect battery life; the standard controller listing does not provide a quantified breakdown of usage effects.
Xbox’s 2019 Elite Series 2 announcement also described its built-in rechargeable battery and included USB-C cable and charging dock. For the current runtime figure, use the product specification rather than treating the announcement as a test of a particular controller’s battery life.
