When the invasion began, the studio activated its plan: some employees and family members were moved west, the displaced team established operations in Prague, and colleagues who stayed in Ukraine continued working amid danger and disruption. The game eventually reached release in November 2024, but that outcome came at a profound human cost.
GSC prepared to move people before the invasion
GSC Game World had arranged buses and an emergency plan to move employees and their families before the invasion began. On February 24, 2022, the studio put those preparations into action. As CEO and game director Ievgen Grygorovych later told The Guardian, “We just had to save as many people as we could.”
Accounts of the evacuation describe different stages and count different groups. The Guardian’s January 2024 interview reported that more than 200 employees and their families were moved to Uzhhorod, before staff leaving Ukraine relocated to Prague in March 2022. In an October 2024 account, Microsoft Source described an initial wave of about 500 people, counting employees and family members, leaving Kyiv. These are not competing totals of GSC staff: they refer to differently framed groups and stages of the response.
The team continued from different circumstances
Prague became a base for the displaced team, but GSC’s development was not simply transferred there as a single unit. Some colleagues remained in Ukraine or worked remotely from it; others joined the military. Their circumstances were not interchangeable: relocation, staying to work amid the invasion, and serving in Ukraine’s defense involved different choices and risks.

The Guardian reported that GSC’s Kyiv office also served as a refuge during power outages. The studio added generators and provided electricity and hot water. GSC’s current About page lists Kyiv and Prague as headquarters, but does not explain how staff or operations are currently divided between the two.
War brought loss, danger and disruption into the work
Working through the invasion meant dealing with air raids, power cuts, displacement, family separation and grief—not just adapting to a new office. In Microsoft’s account, creative director Mariia Grygorovych recalled the first day: “The first day was chaotic and unnerving. For most, it began with frantic early morning calls to relatives across the country… Ask anyone how they found out, and they’ll tell you as if it happened 10 minutes ago – something etched into memory forever,”

The loss of longtime S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series designer Volodymyr Yezhov makes the cost especially stark. The Guardian reported that Yezhov joined Ukraine’s defense and was killed near Bakhmut on December 22, 2022. His death was not merely another production difficulty; it was the loss of a colleague and a person.
Grygorovych told The Guardian, “It’s really hard to make a game during a war.” The line captures the difficulty, but no single account can stand in for how every employee experienced the conflict.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 reached release in November 2024
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a first-person survival shooter set in a post-apocalyptic exclusion zone. Microsoft’s October 31, 2024 release article announced a November 20 launch for Windows 10 and 11, Steam, Xbox and Game Pass. That announcement records the release context at the time; it is not confirmation of current availability or platform status.
The game reaching release after evacuation and a prolonged invasion is part of the team’s story, but it should not turn the war into a convenient plot about overcoming a production obstacle. GSC’s account includes people who moved, people who stayed, people who served, and a colleague who did not return.
