To steal the Idol of Silvanus without triggering a grove-wide fight, first end the Rite of Thorns, then take the idol from the Sacred Pool and be ready to pass a dialogue check if confronted. Taking it while the rite is active can turn the druids against the tiefling refugees and put the “Save the Refugees” quest at risk.
Before you can take the idol, get Mol’s request
Mol offers the “Steal the Sacred Idol” quest after the party earns the tiefling children’s trust in the Emerald Grove. Helping Mirkon, resolving the locket dispute, and saving Arabella are among the actions that can build that trust. Rescuing Mirkon is described as an especially effective way to gain Mol’s regard and learn where to find the children’s hideout.
Speak with Mol in the tiefling hideout and accept the request. Declining her offer locks you out of this quest and its reward.
End the Rite of Thorns before stealing
The idol stands in the Sacred Pool, in the central basin of the Emerald Grove, while druids perform the Rite of Thorns. If you take it during the active ritual, the theft can trigger a signal and make the druids attack the tieflings. The druids also turn hostile to the party, with Rath and Silver identified as exceptions. Enough tiefling deaths can fail “Save the Refugees.”

Instead, finish the rite through one of these story routes:
- Investigate Kagha: Resolve the investigation into Kagha’s actions.
- Save the First Druid: Rescue Halsin.
- Defeat the Goblins: Complete the goblin-leader objective.
The route that makes sense depends on your progress. The quest walkthrough identifies each as a way to end the rite; it does not establish that one is universally preferable.

Take the idol and handle any confrontation
- After the Rite of Thorns ends, return to the Sacred Pool.
- Take the Idol of Silvanus. Ending the rite removes the immediate grove-wide combat trigger described for stealing during the ritual, but it does not guarantee that nobody will notice or challenge you.
- If confronted, try a DC 15 Deception or Intimidation check to avert combat. The walkthrough also describes taking the idol and fast-travelling away before a confrontation; that is an alternative, not a guaranteed no-detection method.
- Bring the idol back to Mol to complete the request.
What to avoid—and why stealth spells are not a sure fix
Do not rely on concealment alone while the rite is active if your goal is to protect the tieflings. Fog Cloud, Darkness, and Invisibility are mentioned as possible tactics, but reports differ on whether they reliably prevent the ritual-triggered response. The clearest supported way to reduce the risk is to end the rite first.
