There is no permanent free trial: during a Free Fly, eligible players can access the Alpha servers without a Game Package, and RSI supplies a basic ship for the event. Check RSI’s current announcements for dates and sign-up instructions before downloading or making plans.
Can you play Star Citizen for free?
Not year-round. RSI’s Knowledge Base article “Does Star Citizen offer a free trial?”, updated May 27, 2026, says, “At this time, Star Citizen does not offer a free trial.” It describes Free Fly events as occasional opportunities to try the game without a monetary pledge. During an eligible event, you do not need a Game Package to enter the Alpha test servers, and RSI provides a basic ship for the event.
Free Fly dates and available ships vary. RSI says events generally last about a week or slightly longer, but that is not a guarantee of a particular event’s duration. The official Comm-Link listing is available at RSI Comm-Link. The listing alone does not confirm that a Free Fly is currently active, so look for a current event announcement and its Free Fly Knowledge Base article before relying on an event date.
How to join a Star Citizen Free Fly
- Confirm an event is open. Check RSI’s recent Comm-Link announcements and the Announcements section for the event’s Free Fly article. Follow that event’s instructions and dates rather than an old guide or unofficial referral page.
- Create and activate an RSI account. Register through RSI and confirm the account using the activation link sent by email. RSI’s account creation guide, updated August 26, 2025, explains the process. A referral code is optional; if you want to use one, enter it during account creation because RSI says it cannot be added later.
- Check your PC against the requirements. Review RSI’s current game and launcher requirements before downloading. In particular, confirm that you have enough compatible SSD space.
- Download the RSI Launcher and install the game. Use RSI’s official launcher, then follow the event article’s instructions to access the game while the Free Fly is active.
- Play within the event window. The event supplies access without a Game Package for its stated period, along with a basic ship. The ship model depends on the event.
What happens when the Free Fly ends?
Free Fly access is temporary, not a lasting free account entitlement. RSI’s account guidance says you need a Game Package to play outside the event. RSI’s multiplayer options article, updated July 27, 2026, also describes the listed game modules as requiring a Game Package that includes Star Citizen. Do not treat those package-based modules as a permanent free trial.

Check your PC before downloading
RSI’s requirements article, updated December 17, 2025, lists these minimums:
- Operating system: Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11. RSI says it does not currently support Linux or macOS.
- Processor: A quad-core CPU supporting AVX, AVX2, and FMA3.
- Graphics: A DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4 GB of RAM.
- System memory: 16 GB or more RAM.
- Storage: A 150+ GB SSD.
These are vendor-published minimum requirements, not a promise of smooth performance. Check RSI’s latest requirements page and your PC’s actual compatibility and available SSD capacity. You only need another drive if your current setup lacks sufficient compatible space; buying storage does not grant access to the game.
