PvE is an online mode—not an offline campaign—and its squad task-sharing rules and character progression depend on the game version.
What PvE means in Gray Zone Warfare
PvE means player-versus-environment: the main opposition is AI rather than rival-faction players. The game remains a persistent open-world tactical shooter built around missions, exploration, combat and survival; choosing PvE does not remove its AI firefights or injury system. MADFINGER Games describes the world as 42 km² in its official game overview.
PvE is not the same as an offline single-player campaign. The official Early Access launch post describes PvE servers and playing with friends. In Joint Operations, players from different factions can capture and use the same Combat Outposts without faction rivalry, according to the developer’s World & Weather post.
Choose PvE, then decide whether to play solo or with a squad
The launch announcement distinguishes PvE from PvEvP servers and says you can play solo or group with friends. Choose PvE if you want to focus on AI encounters and tasks without rival-faction player conflict; PvEvP includes that additional player-versus-player risk.

Before grouping up, make sure your friends can join the same server and meet the requirements for the task you plan to tackle. The June 25, 2026 Patch 0.4.5.0 notes describe shared task play: a squad leader accepts eligible tasks and members can coordinate and share progress. Members must be on the same server, have unlocked the task’s region and vendor, and satisfy its prerequisites. The patch-notes page could not be opened successfully, so check the linked notes or current client for exact eligibility details.
Take a task and plan the trip
The core loop is to accept a task, travel through the open world to its location, find the objective or loot, and deal with AI opposition. The game’s official overview frames play around tactical missions, valuable loot and survival; the launch post also describes its combat and health systems.

- Confirm that the task’s region is unlocked and that you meet its prerequisites before setting out.
- Coordinate with squadmates about the objective and who is taking the lead, especially when task progress is shared.
- Expect AI combat and plan your route and equipment accordingly; the available official material does not document every current menu interaction or mission route.
Use Combat Outposts as field resources
Combat Outposts (COPs) are capturable strategic locations. In Joint Operations, all factions can capture and use them simultaneously without faction rivalry. MADFINGER Games describes them as providing respawns, vendors and resupply in its World & Weather post. Their locations and mechanics can change between updates, so use the live game for current details.
Prepare for injuries and manage your gear
Injuries are part of survival, not just a cosmetic effect: the official game overview says wounds can affect perception and performance and require diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Carry suitable medical supplies, monitor your character’s health panel and treat problems as they arise. The exact effects of individual items are not established here, so rely on the current client rather than assuming older item advice still applies.

Weapons and gear are configurable, and preparation matters before you leave safety. A microphone-equipped headset is optional, not a PvE requirement; the official launch post describes voice communication, including proximity VOIP, as a way to coordinate.

As of October 8, 2026, Update 0.5 (Rogue Ops) had been announced but was not yet released. MADFINGER Games scheduled a Supporter Preview for October 19 and full release for October 22 in its October 4 Update 0.5 announcement. Those are future dates relative to October 8, not instructions for a live feature.

The announcement says 0.5 will allow up to four characters, each assigned a mode and faction, with separate PvE and PvEvP progression. It also describes transferring existing progression to one mode while wiping locker contents and money. Treat those as announced changes until the update is live; check the official announcement and current client for rollout status.
Version changes also matter for the systems described above: the 0.5 announcement calls out changes to Combat Outposts and health mechanics. Separately, MADFINGER Games’ March 11, 2026 Update 0.4 content report says that update added more than 25 locations and seven differentiated AI factions. Those are 0.4 additions, not a timeless count of all current locations or AI factions.
