A successful parry builds stun and can stagger the enemy. If the attack is marked by a red circle, dodge instead: that warning indicates an unblockable attack.
How to unlock Parry
Parry is an ability in the Ranger ability tree. Spend an ability point in a core tree to unlock it, as described in Game8’s Avowed parry guide. Exact mechanics may change with updates.
Use a loadout that can block
Parrying uses the block action, so your equipped weapons must allow blocking. Game8 lists these compatible setups:
- A shield
- A single one-handed weapon
- A two-handed weapon
Dual wielding prevents blocking and parrying. A non-shield item in your off hand, such as a grimoire or pistol, also prevents it.

When to press block
Watch the enemy’s melee attack and press block just before a parryable hit lands. Game8 lists Right Click on PC and LT on Xbox as the default controls; check your in-game bindings if you use another platform or a custom control scheme. The cited guidance does not specify an exact parry-window duration.
What a successful parry does
A successful parry adds to the enemy’s stun and can stagger the attacker, creating an opening to counterattack. Game8 says a perfect parry prevents health and stamina loss.

When to dodge instead
A red circle signals an unblockable attack, so do not try to parry it. Xbox Wire’s Avowed Survival Guide recommends dodging these attacks. For other parryable melee strikes, use block at the last moment to build stun and potentially stagger the enemy.
