For U.S. civilian firearm storage, secure the firearm against unauthorized access—not merely by hiding it or putting it out of reach. At home, use a safe, lock box, or another appropriate locking device; store firearms unloaded when possible and lock ammunition separately. For temporary storage in a vehicle, use a separate lockable case kept out of sight, then remove the firearm when you get home. Rules vary, so check the federal, state, and local laws that apply to you.
What secure storage means
The CDC advises that a firearm should be secured to prevent unauthorized access. Hiding it or placing it somewhere children cannot easily reach does not meet that standard; a safe or lock box is one storage option the CDC identifies. This article covers civilian firearms in the United States. It is not universal advice for every kind of weapon or gear, or a substitute for checking the laws where you live.
How to store a firearm at home
- Unload it before storage. ATF’s general guidance is to unload firearms before putting them away.
- Lock the firearm. Use a secure storage container, such as a firearm safe, gun safe, lock box, or lockable gun case. A trigger or cable lock is another option identified in ATF guidance.
- Secure ammunition separately. ATF advises keeping ammunition locked away from firearms.
- Control access to keys and combinations. Keep them somewhere children cannot reach and limit access to responsible adults.
- Check the arrangement against applicable law. ATF advises owners to familiarize themselves with federal, state, and local requirements.
ATF’s guidance for homes where children may be present is: “If there are children in the home, use child safety locks or other commercially available locking mechanisms on your firearms and/or keep your firearms locked in a secure location accessible to adults only.” The agency’s Learn About Firearms Safety and Security page was updated February 6, 2026 and also lists a January 6, 2025 review date.

Choosing a storage device
These categories serve different purposes; official guidance does not rank brands or products. Choose a device that fits the storage location, who needs access, and your legal requirements.

Federal law uses the term “secure gun storage or safety device” for certain firearm-mounted locks and for safes, gun cases, and lock boxes designed to require a key, combination, or similar means to unlock. That is the definition in the cited U.S. statute, not a complete description of every jurisdiction’s requirements; see 18 U.S.C. § 921 (2023 edition).

How to store a firearm temporarily in a vehicle
A locked car door, glove compartment, or center console is not a substitute for a separate secure storage device. For temporary vehicle storage, ATF recommends placing the firearm in a lockable case or lock box and keeping it out of sight. Remove it from the vehicle when you return home.
