Earthfort is Heavy Guardian’s shield-focused tank specialization: generate Rage and Sand Crystals with Sandshroud and Star Shatter, then spend them on Rage Burst and Shield Bash to maintain protection. Use taunts and defensive skills to control enemies, and time major defenses for dangerous attacks. Earthfort can sustain itself well once its shield loop is running, but it is more vulnerable while shields are down and can struggle against overwhelming pulls.
What Earthfort does—and what it needs
Heavy Guardian fights with a Guardblade, and Earthfort builds its tanking around shields, mitigation, and control. Its basic loop is to generate Rage and Sand Crystals, turn those resources into shields, and use taunts or interrupts to keep enemies under control. The specialization is relatively straightforward to operate, but its protection is less dependable when a shield drops or when too many enemies arrive at once.

Azul Mosaic Tile-Placement Strategy Board Game, 2-4 Players, 30-45 Min | $31.99 | Buy on Amazon |
Rage comes from taking damage, basic attacks, Star Shatter, and Sandshroud; each Halberd’s Edge hit generates five Rage. Sand Crystals are required by several Expertise skills, with Sandshroud and Star Shatter serving as key generators. Earthfort therefore rewards steady resource building rather than spending every available resource immediately.

- Halberd’s Edge
- Shield Bash
- Cracking Echo
- Star Shatter
- Rage Burst
- Sandshroud
- Stoneform or Sandward as the flex choice
The guide identifies Star Shatter, Rage Burst, and Sandshroud as mandatory skills. The remaining choices support the build’s attacks, resource spending, control, and defensive timing.
How to build and spend resources
Build with Sandshroud and Star Shatter
Use Sandshroud early enough to start its resource generation. Prydwen’s guide reports that its six-second effect generates 33 Rage and six Sand Crystals; the talent tree can also support shield potency. Star Shatter grants 25 Rage and one Sand Crystal on hit, stuns its target, and has two charges with a 12-second recharge, according to the same guide. Use it when it can connect so the attack contributes both control and resources.
Spend on Rage Burst for the main shield
Rage Burst costs 50 Rage and five Sand Crystals. The guide describes it as a nearby-enemy disrupt that provides a large shield and reduces physical damage from targets hit by 10% for 12 seconds. When those resources are available and a defensive window is approaching, Rage Burst is the main shield spend to plan around.
Use Shield Bash between Rage Burst windows
Shield Bash costs 40 Rage and can consume one or two Sand Crystals to add shields. It is useful as a bridge when Rage Burst is unavailable, including when its free-cast conditions apply. Avoid spending so freely that you lack the resources for an imminent defensive window.
Control enemies and choose the right defensive skill
Stoneform for aggro and mitigation
Stoneform taunts nearby enemies, increases Armor, and reduces incoming damage by 20%. Prydwen’s guide also says it automatically parries boss red attacks during its ten-second window. Choose it when establishing aggro and reducing incoming damage are the priority.
Sandward for a brief immunity window
Sandward is the situational alternative when damage immunity matters more: the guide describes it as providing five seconds of damage immunity and a taunt. Choosing Sandward means giving up Stoneform-linked talent enhancements, so it is an encounter-specific trade-off rather than a default upgrade.
Cracking Echo for area control
Cracking Echo combines damage and control. The guide describes it as a large-area attack that stuns for three seconds, taunts, grants five Sand Crystals, and activates Earth Guard. Use its timing for the encounter’s offensive or defensive need. Because exact ability mechanics can change, check the live in-game description before relying on those values.
A practical sequence in combat
- Establish control: Use Stoneform when you need to gather aggro and mitigate damage. Select Sandward instead if the encounter calls for its immunity window.
- Start resource generation: Activate Sandshroud early and let its effect build Rage and Sand Crystals.
- Hit with Star Shatter: Use a charge when it can connect to gain resources and stun an enemy.
- Secure the main shield: Spend 50 Rage and five Sand Crystals on Rage Burst when available and useful for the next danger window.
- Bridge the gap: Use Shield Bash to turn available resources into shields between Rage Burst windows, including when a free cast is available.
- Time Cracking Echo: Use its taunt, stun, and resource effects when the encounter needs added control or a defensive tool.
This sequence follows the skills’ reported functions and costs; it is a practical synthesis, not a claim of personal playtesting. Adapt the order to enemy attacks and avoid leaving yourself without resources for a known danger window.

When Sandgrip can make sense
Sandgrip can replace Sandshroud when gathering, interrupting, or slowing enemies is especially useful. The guide warns that the swap sacrifices significant resource generation, so it changes the build’s shield loop as well as its control tools.
Stats and endgame gear context
Prydwen prioritizes Mastery and Versatility and recommends about 12% Haste for consistency in the build it describes. Its detailed endgame setup assumes level 140/150 set gear and a level 150 relic weapon. Treat those targets as endgame guidance, not universal requirements for leveling or every encounter.
Earthfort or Block?
Both are Heavy Guardian tank specializations, but they emphasize different defenses. Prydwen characterizes Block as centered on raw mitigation and a high block state, with less self-sustain. Earthfort instead leans on shields and has stronger tank damage in the guide’s ratings.
| Specialization | Defensive emphasis | What may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Earthfort | Shield generation and self-sustain | You prefer building resources into shields and want the guide’s stronger tank-damage profile. |
| Block | Raw mitigation and a high block state | You prefer a block-centered approach and can accept less self-sustain. |
Choose according to the defensive style you prefer, your current stats, and the needs of the encounter; the guide’s ratings are not a guarantee of performance for every character or situation.
