You can play A Way Out online without buying two copies: one player needs the full game, and the invited player can join using the free Friend Pass trial. Both players must use the same platform type, and console online play also requires the relevant subscription.
What you need to play online
- One player with access to the full game. That player hosts and invites the other person.
- The invited player’s free Friend Pass trial, downloaded from the relevant platform store.
- Both players on the same platform type; EA does not describe Friend Pass as cross-platform.
- An EA account and a persistent internet connection for online co-op.
- For console online play, both players need the applicable membership: PlayStation Plus on PlayStation or Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox. Check your local store for current terms.
EA describes A Way Out as a two-player co-op game. Its Friend Pass is a way for one invited player to join the owner’s online game—not a way for both players to play online without anyone owning the full game. EA’s Friend Pass instructions also state that the free trial is unavailable in Germany.

How to use the Friend Pass
- Choose the platform. Confirm that the owner and invited player will play on the same platform type and that the owner can access the full game there.
- Send the invitation. The owner opens A Way Out and invites the friend from the game’s main menu.
- Download the trial. The invited player finds the A Way Out Friend Pass or free trial in the relevant store—EA app, PlayStation Store or Xbox Store—and downloads it. EA says the trial download is the same size as the full game, so plan for a full game-sized download.
- Install and join. After installation, the invited player accepts the owner’s invitation and joins the session.
Button names and store layouts can vary by platform and change over time. For the current flow, use EA’s Friend Pass support page and your platform’s store listing.

EA’s Friend Pass explainer describes both couch co-op and online play. For online sessions, the invited friend uses the trial; couch co-op is the alternative when you can play together locally.

If the Friend Pass option is missing
- Check that both players are on the same platform type and that the owner has access to the full game.
- Confirm the invited player is looking for the Friend Pass or free trial listing, not a separate full-game purchase.
- Check the store listing for your region. EA says the free trial is not available in Germany; availability elsewhere can vary.
- On console, verify both players’ online memberships. Also check that both players have EA accounts and an internet connection.
- Use the current store listing or EA Help for troubleshooting. Avoid unofficial downloads.
EA lists the game for EA app/PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox on its product page. Store availability and subscription names or terms can change, so confirm the details for your region before setting up a session.
