Tap your melee input to strike with the weapon you’re holding; hold that same input to draw the dedicated Knife. To put it away, switch to your primary or secondary weapon. Your exact button depends on your platform and control bindings.
How to attack with the Knife
- Tap melee to make a quick strike with the weapon currently in your hands.
- Hold melee to draw the dedicated Knife. It remains equipped until you switch weapons.
- Switch to your primary or secondary weapon to stow the Knife and return to a firearm.
These are the general multiplayer controls described in the official Black Ops 6 multiplayer guide. The October 2024 launch guide gives the right thumbstick as a controller example for melee, but that is not a universal input for every platform or layout.

Find your melee input and weapon-cycle setting
Controls can be customized, so use the binding shown for your active device and layout rather than assuming a default. Open Settings and use the in-game Search Settings field to find the relevant control. The official Controls & Settings guide explains that layouts and combat behaviors are customizable.
The October 2024 launch guide also describes a controller option at Controller > Combat > Dedicated Melee Weapon Activation > Hold Melee/Weapon Cycle. When available in your current settings, this option supports cycling among primary, secondary, and melee weapons. Settings labels or behavior may change with updates, so check the version of the game you are playing.

What the Knife is suited for
A pre-game loadout guide describes the Knife as “Fisticuffs range” and “The fastest mobility.” That guide is explicitly for the Multiplayer Open Beta, so treat those phrases as a qualitative description of a close-quarters, mobility-focused role—not as a current numerical comparison with other weapons. The launch guide says Gunsmith customization for melee weapons is cosmetic only; it does not establish performance-improving Knife attachments.

The cited guides do not establish current Knife damage, exact range, attack speed, or hits to eliminate. November 2024 Season 01 patch notes mention improvements to melee attack speeds, particularly for two-hit-kill melee weapons, and list the Knife among the changes. Those historical notes do not establish the Knife’s current speed or performance in a later game update. See the Season 01 patch notes for that historical change.
