Where to find the hidden door
Ancient Cities generate in the Deep Dark biome. Look for the large, portal-like reinforced-deepslate structure at the city’s center, then search around its base for the entrance to the hidden redstone room. A community reference places it beneath the wooden bridge between the center and the wall; use that as a landmark, not a guaranteed coordinate. The structure resembles a portal, but the available sources establish its connection to a hidden room—not that it functions as a portal.
How to trigger the piston door
- Approach the concealed entrance and look for the sculk sensor associated with the mechanism.
- Stand near the sensor and eat a food item. Eating creates a vibration, which is intended to activate the sensor and open the piston door. A creator walkthrough demonstrates this trigger, and Mojang’s Java issue record describes the door as intended to detect a player eating from outside. Mojang’s issue record.
- If the door stays closed, adjust your position and try eating again. The sources do not establish one exact position that works in every generated city.
What to do if it does not open
Mojang’s issue record documents a historical eating-detection problem in Java snapshots 22w13a and 22w14a, fixed in 22w14a. That record is not a current compatibility guide: it does not establish behavior across present-day Java and Bedrock versions. Check the issue record for its version details.

How to avoid attracting a Warden
Sculk sensors detect vibrations from actions such as moving, placing or breaking blocks, and dropping items. A sensor can signal nearby sculk shriekers, which summon Wardens. - Move deliberately near sculk sensors and shriekers.
- Avoid unnecessary block placement, breaking, or dropping items while searching for the entrance.
- If a shrieker activates, prioritize getting away rather than continuing to test the door.
