Chapter 5’s secret area is Bishui Cave. To unlock it, start the Pale-Axe Stalwart’s Five Element Cart quest in Ashen Pass I, advance through the cart encounters and the rolling-ball sequence, then defeat the Rusty-Gold Cart and interact with the frozen gate in Cooling Slope.
Start the Five Element Cart quest
- Travel to the Ashen Pass I shrine in the Woods of Ember. Find the Pale-Axe Stalwart near the fight between bulls and undead soldiers, and defeat him.
- Speak with the Stalwart repeatedly until his dialogue is exhausted. This starts the quest that leads to Bishui Cave.
Advance the cart quest and follow the Stalwart
As you progress through Chapter 5, deal with the carts on the quest route and return to the Pale-Axe Stalwart to exhaust his dialogue at the relevant checkpoints. The guides identify the Brown-Iron, Gray-Bronze and Crimson-Silver carts among the encounters associated with the progression. His position changes as the quest advances, so check the locations indicated by the route rather than expecting him to remain at Ashen Pass I. Resting at a shrine or refreshing the area may be needed for his next appearance.
If he is not where expected, check earlier or later quest locations and make sure you have completed the next cart step. PowerPyx names Ashen Pass I, Valley Entrance, Fallen Furnace Crater and Cooling Slope in its route; the guides differ in how they explain the intermediate checkpoints, but agree that the Stalwart’s conversations are part of advancing the quest.
Do not confuse the Horse Guai cart with this quest
The cart associated with Ma Tianba, also called Horse Guai, is a separate quest consideration. It is not the final cart encounter required to open Bishui Cave. If you are pursuing the Horse Guai quest, follow its own prerequisites before interacting with that cart; early interaction can affect that separate quest.

Open the route after the rolling-ball sequence
- Continue through Field of Fire until the story sequence removes the rolling ball and clears the flames.
- Backtrack along the route and take the side path that has become accessible. Follow it down toward Cooling Slope and the large frozen gate. The detour can include optional encounters.
Defeat the Rusty-Gold Cart and enter Bishui Cave
The Rusty-Gold Cart is the final cart encounter on the secret-area route and an optional boss. Defeat it, then speak with the Pale-Axe Stalwart beside the frozen gate. Interact with the gate to proceed; continuing through the path takes you into Bishui Cave.
