Riot requires DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 on Windows, and removed DirectX 9 support with Patch 14.9 on May 1, 2024. The old DX9 advice—and the beta-era DX11BetaTest=1 setting—does not provide a current supported way to switch versions.
What DirectX version does League of Legends require?
Riot’s current minimum requirements specify DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 for Windows. The requirement is for the graphics feature level, not simply the presence of a DirectX installation. Riot lists Metal for Mac instead of this Windows requirement. See Riot’s minimum and recommended system requirements.
Riot removed DirectX 9 support for League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics with Patch 14.9 on May 1, 2024. That change makes guides recommending a switch back to DX9 outdated. Riot’s crash troubleshooting guidance also notes that outdated DirectX can cause hardware-interaction problems, including driver crashes and input or audio failures.
Why the old DX11BetaTest setting is not a current switch
During the DX11 beta, Riot told testers to add DX11BetaTest=1 under [General] in game.cfg. The historical DX11 beta announcement also described removing the entry or setting it to 0 to check whether an issue was specific to DX11. That instruction belonged to beta testing; it is not evidence of a supported current DirectX selector. Editing the file does not restore DX9 support.

What to do if League won’t launch or shows a DirectX error
First distinguish a graphics-capability limit from a software or driver problem. The right next step depends on whether the graphics hardware supports the required feature level and on the specific error shown.

If the hardware may not support feature level 11_0
- Check your graphics hardware and its supported DirectX feature levels against Riot’s Windows minimum requirements.
- If the capability is missing, a configuration edit cannot add it. Riot says affected players may need to update their hardware; the Play button may be greyed out with a message asking for a hardware update.
If the hardware meets the requirement
- Use the exact error message to guide troubleshooting rather than assuming a DirectX-version toggle will fix it.
- Check for relevant graphics-driver or system issues, since Riot identifies outdated DirectX as a possible cause of hardware-interaction problems.
- If you consider resetting settings, note that Riot’s minimum-settings-file procedure restores a bare-minimum configuration and replaces current in-game settings. It is a settings reset, not a DirectX-version change; follow the current instructions on Riot’s requirements page only if that reset is appropriate.
