Minecraft Java Edition does not include native controller support, so connecting an Xbox controller to your computer is only the first step: you also need a compatible controller-support mod. Microsoft’s edition comparison says only Bedrock has built-in controller support. For Java, MidnightControls explicitly lists Xbox controllers, while Controlify is another mod option.
What you need before you start
- Minecraft Java Edition installed on your computer.
- An Xbox controller connected to the computer. Minecraft’s official controls guide describes connecting a controller to a computer or mobile device, but does not provide a current pairing walkthrough for every Windows, macOS, or Linux version.
- A controller-support mod release compatible with the exact Minecraft version and mod loader used by your game instance.
How to connect an Xbox controller to Minecraft Java
- Connect the controller to your computer. Use a connection method supported by your controller and operating system. Confirm it is connected before troubleshooting Minecraft; the Minecraft controls guide covers the general connection route, not platform-specific pairing steps.
- Check the game instance’s version and loader. Find the exact Minecraft Java version and whether the instance uses Fabric, NeoForge, or another loader. If you use a launcher or modpack, check the instance itself rather than assuming it matches your newest game installation.
- Choose a compatible controller mod. MidnightControls explicitly lists Xbox controllers. Controlify is another Java controller mod; its CurseForge listing has shown Fabric and NeoForge builds for selected game versions. Check the project’s current files and requirements before choosing a release.
- Install the mod in the intended instance. Follow that mod’s current installation directions and place it in the instance you plan to launch. Instructions can vary by launcher, loader, and modpack, so there is no single universal installation path.
- Launch the instance and check controller settings. Make sure the mod loaded, then inspect its controller options or mappings. With MidnightControls, an unmapped device may need a custom mapping.
- Test the controls with keyboard and mouse nearby. Check movement, camera, menus, and inventory. Keep keyboard and mouse available while you verify the mapping and adjust any controls that do not behave as expected.
Which controller mod should you choose?

Neither project is established as universally better. Prioritize a release that matches your instance’s Minecraft version and loader; then compare the controller recognition and mapping features you need.
If the controller does not work
- No input in the game: Verify that the controller is connected to the computer and that you launched the instance where the mod is installed.
- The mod does not load: Recheck that its release matches both the instance’s Minecraft version and its loader. Do not assume the newest file supports an older game or a modpack-managed instance.
- The controller is detected but buttons behave incorrectly: Open the mod’s controller settings and inspect the mapping. For MidnightControls, create or adjust a custom mapping if the device lacks one.
- Menus or inventory are awkward to use: Test those separately from movement and camera control. Keep the keyboard and mouse available while you configure the layout.
Java Edition versus Bedrock controller support
Microsoft’s comparison distinguishes the editions plainly: both support mouse and keyboard, but controller support is built into Bedrock rather than Java. That is why a Java player needs an added input method such as a controller-support mod. The official Minecraft controls guide’s general advice about connecting a controller does not mean Java has native controller input.
