If the objective still will not advance, leave the area and return later; if that fails, load a save from before the problem began. Bethesda says Support cannot reset quests or restore lost progress, so preserve an earlier save before trying changes to your game state.
Try these low-risk fixes first
- Check the quest log and map. Reopen your quest log, confirm the affected quest is active, and inspect its map markers for a location or next step you may have missed. This is Bethesda’s first recommended check. Bethesda Support: What do I do if I am stuck on a quest in Fallout 4?
- Leave the area and come back. Make a save before leaving, spend some time exploring elsewhere, then return to the affected location. Bethesda says time away may reset an area; it is not a guaranteed quest repair.
- Load an earlier save. If the objective remains stuck, reload a save from before the issue occurred. For a quest-specific problem that persists, Bethesda recommends going back to a save from before you accepted the quest. You may lose progress made since that save.
Bethesda Support states: “Please note that Bethesda Customer Support is not able to reset quests or recover lost items or progress in Fallout 4.”

If the problem affects more than one quest
For broader character, NPC, or interface problems, Bethesda lists additional general troubleshooting steps. These are escalation options, not confirmed fixes for every stuck quest. Try them one at a time, and keep a suitable save before making changes.
- Load an earlier save.
- Travel elsewhere for 24–48 in-game hours, then return to the affected area.
- Exit the game and reboot your console; if needed, hard-reset it.
- If you use mods, disable and delete them to check whether the issue persists.
- Reinstall the game only after less disruptive steps fail.
These steps come from Bethesda’s general troubleshooting guidance for Fallout 4 issues. Disabling mods or reinstalling can change your setup, so avoid doing either without considering how your saves depend on installed content.

Be careful with console commands
Bethesda describes console commands as unsupported and warns that they can break quests, fast travel, or AI. If a command preceded the problem, the official recommendation is to load a save from before you used it. Avoid trying an arbitrary setstage command: the correct quest and stage matter, and a wrong command can make the game state worse. The general support guidance does not provide a safe universal command or a console equivalent.
Check your platform and game version
Bethesda’s April 11, 2024 update announcement said the PS4 and Xbox One update included stability improvements, login fixes, and quest fixes. The PC update included a variety of quest updates, among other fixes. That announcement describes changes in that update; it does not promise a fix for every quest issue. Bethesda’s May 13, 2024 Next Gen Update 2 notes list these versions: 1.10.765 for Xbox Series S|X, 1.10.985 for PS5, and 1.10.984 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The notes describe general stability and other platform-specific fixes, not a universal procedure for stuck quests. There is no single reset method established for every quest. If the steps above do not work, identify the exact problem so advice can be checked against the right quest and setup:

- Quest name and the objective that will not update
- Platform and game version
- Whether mods are installed, and whether the problem began after changing mods or updating the game
- What you tried and which earlier saves are available
