First check Riot’s official Service Status for an incident affecting VALORANT in your region. If there is no matching incident, try restarting the Riot Client, then check your connection, available disk space and network settings.
Check whether VALORANT is down in your region
Open the Service Status page linked from the official VALORANT Support site. Look for an incident that matches VALORANT, your region and the time the update failed. A report that does not match those details may not explain your problem.
If Riot reports a relevant incident, wait for it to be resolved and try again later. Changing your PC’s network settings cannot fix a server-side problem. If there is no matching incident, continue with local checks; the status page alone cannot rule out every temporary or account-specific problem.
Try the simplest client and PC checks
- Close and reopen the Riot Client, then retry the update.
- If it still fails, restart your PC and try again.
These are low-risk checks, not guaranteed fixes. If the same error persists, note its exact wording and move on rather than repeatedly restarting.

Check your connection and Windows setup
Riot’s network guide recommends checking the connection before changing advanced settings. Work through these checks:
- Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled and that you are connected to the intended network with the correct saved credentials.
- If Wi-Fi is unreliable, try a wired Ethernet connection. Check that router and network cables are securely connected.
- Temporarily test without a proxy or VPN. If the update works without one, investigate that service’s settings rather than assuming Riot is down.
- Check for and install available Windows updates, then retry.
If other internet services also fail, the problem may be with your connection rather than VALORANT. If they work but the game update does not, continue with the Riot-specific checks below.

When to use Windows network troubleshooting or change DNS
If the connection still appears faulty, Riot’s network guide describes using the Windows network troubleshooter, renewing the IP address and flushing the DNS cache. It also explains how to switch to a public DNS provider. These steps change network configuration, so try them only after the basic checks.
The DNS addresses listed in Riot’s guide are Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4; and Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Riot cautions that some internet service providers block third-party DNS. If changing DNS leaves you without internet access, restore your original DNS settings. DNS changes and IP renewal may help with a local connection problem; they will not resolve a Riot service incident.

Check firewall or router settings only if needed
A firewall can block VALORANT or Vanguard, and router configuration may affect connections to Riot’s servers. If the earlier checks fail, use Riot’s official firewall and port-forwarding instructions for the relevant settings. Do not turn off firewall protection wholesale or forward ports at random; if you are unsure how to change a router setting, ask your network administrator or internet provider.
Check whether the update is stuck on a local patching issue
Riot’s background-patching guide says the Riot Client must be running for background patching. If the error specifically reports insufficient disk space, free up space on the drive used for the game. Then select the patch button to resume, or leave the client running and wait for another automatic patch cycle. A disk-space error points to a local patching problem, not proof that the update server is down.

Tell a server incident from a local update problem

Contact Riot Support if the update still fails
If the status check and relevant local troubleshooting do not resolve the problem, submit a support ticket through the official VALORANT Support site. Include your region, the exact error text, when it began and which steps you tried. Avoid changing additional firewall, DNS or router settings while waiting for help.
