Before you install: check Minecraft edition and compatibility
Pixelmon is a Java Edition mod; it does not work with Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Before downloading, match all three parts: Minecraft version, Pixelmon release, and mod loader. The latest release listing identifies Pixelmon 9.4.1 for Minecraft 1.21.1 using NeoForge. See the Pixelmon project and release files on CurseForge.

Older Pixelmon versions use different pairings. For example, the project listing also includes releases for Minecraft 1.20.2, 1.20.1, and 1.16.5 using Forge. Check the individual release file rather than assuming that every version uses the same loader. The Pixelmon installation overview’s compatibility table stops at older versions, so use the newer project listing for the 1.21.1 release.
Install Pixelmon with the CurseForge app
This is the simplest option for most players because CurseForge installs the appropriate Forge or NeoForge version and places the Pixelmon JAR in the profile’s mods folder.

- Install and open the CurseForge app.
- Search for “Pixelmon.”
- Choose a Pixelmon profile whose Minecraft version matches the version you want to play. For the latest listed release as of October 8, 2026, look for Pixelmon 9.4.1 for Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge.
- Select Install and wait for the profile setup to finish.
- Launch the Pixelmon profile from CurseForge.
Confirm the game version on the profile before launching. Installing a profile for a different Minecraft version does not create the same setup, even if it also contains Pixelmon. CurseForge’s Pixelmon FAQ describes the managed installation process.
Install Pixelmon manually with the Minecraft Launcher
The manual guide below follows Pixelmon’s Forge instructions, last edited March 3, 2021. Use it only for a Forge-compatible Pixelmon release. For Pixelmon 9.4.1 on Minecraft 1.21.1, the current release listing specifies NeoForge, so do not follow the old Forge loader steps unchanged.

- Find the Pixelmon release you want and confirm its Minecraft version and required loader.
- Download and install the matching client loader for that release. For a Forge release, use the appropriate Forge build; for a NeoForge release, use the matching NeoForge build.
- In the Minecraft Launcher, select the loader profile and start the game once. Check that the loader appears on the main menu, then close Minecraft.
- Download the Pixelmon file that matches the selected release and game version.
- Open the game directory for that launcher profile and find its
modsfolder. Create the folder if it does not exist. - Copy the downloaded
.jarfile directly intomods. Do not extract or edit it. - Launch the same loader profile again and open the main menu’s Mods section to check that Pixelmon appears.
Pixelmon’s manual installation guide documents the older Forge process. Follow the selected release’s loader requirement rather than mixing instructions or files from different versions.
Choose between the managed and manual methods

Verify the mod loaded and troubleshoot problems
- Pixelmon is missing from the Mods list: Confirm you launched the intended profile, then check that the JAR is in that profile’s
modsfolder. - The game will not launch or crashes: Recheck the Minecraft version, Pixelmon release, and loader pairing. If it still crashes, consult the crash report, as the official installation overview recommends.
- Loading is incomplete or performance is poor: Check the installation overview’s memory-allocation guidance and the selected release’s requirements. The overview lists Java 8 and at least 2 GB of available or assignable RAM, but it does not establish those figures as requirements for the newer 1.21.1 release.
Installing the client is not the same as setting up a server
The steps above prepare a client for single-player or for joining an existing server; they do not create a multiplayer server. To join one, use the same Pixelmon version as the server or the server may reject the connection. Server creation has separate instructions in the Pixelmon server guide, which recommends paid hosting for larger servers.
