In Minecraft Java Edition, open chat, enter /gamemode spectator, and press Enter. In single-player, commands must be enabled for the world; on a multiplayer server, you need permission to use commands.
Enter spectator mode with a command
- Open the in-game chat.
- Type
/gamemode spectator. Include the leading slash when entering the command in chat. - Press Enter to run it.
The command changes your game mode to spectator. In a Java single-player world, commands must be enabled. On a multiplayer server, you need a high enough permission level; if you lack it, ask the server owner or administrator. Minecraft’s command guidance explains these access requirements.

Use the keyboard game-mode switcher
Mojang’s May 2020 Java snapshot notes document an alternative: hold F3 and tap F4 to open the game-mode switcher, select a mode, then release F3 to apply it. The notes also document F3+N as a spectator toggle that returns you to the previous game mode. Mojang’s snapshot notes describe these controls; if they do not work in your setup, check your key bindings and keyboard configuration, or use the command.
What spectator mode lets you do
Spectator mode is for observing a world, not interacting with it. You can fly through blocks, but you cannot physically alter the world. Minecraft Help’s game-mode overview describes spectator mode as watching a world without interaction.

Why /gamemode spectator may not work
- In single-player: Check that commands are enabled for the world.
- On a server: Check that your account has sufficient permission to run commands. If it does not, contact the server owner or administrator.
Do not confuse /gamemode with /spectate
/gamemode spectator puts you in spectator mode. /spectate is a separate Java command: Mojang’s 19W41A notes describe using it to make a player who is already in spectator mode spectate an entity. Mojang’s 19W41A notes cover that command.
