Spoilers: This guide reveals the Light Dragon’s connection to Zelda’s story.
The Master Sword is embedded in the Light Dragon’s head. Find and board the dragon, reach its head, then hold the interaction button through the pull sequence. You need two full stamina circles; the Dragon’s Tears quest and cleansing the Deku Tree can help you discover the sword, but are not required if you can reach the dragon another way.
Meet the stamina requirement first
According to GameSpot’s May 12, 2023 guide, pulling the sword requires two full stamina circles. Your starting stamina circle plus five additional stamina vessels meets that threshold. If you spend all the relevant upgrades on stamina, that is 20 Lights of Blessing: Nintendo says four can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for one stamina vessel, while GameSpot gives the five-vessel total.
Temporary stamina boosts from food do not replace the required full circles. Food can still restore stamina in general: Nintendo Support notes that meals can restore stamina when you are trying to reach hard-to-access places. See Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom FAQ for general gameplay guidance.

Choose how you want to find the sword
| Route | What it offers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Deku Tree and quest guidance | The conventional story route provides guidance about the sword’s location and can help track the moving dragon, according to GameSpot’s guide. | Requires pursuing that quest route; it is not mandatory to obtain the sword. |
| Find the Light Dragon independently | You can collect the sword without completing Dragon’s Tears or cleansing the Deku Tree if you independently locate and reach the dragon, according to GameSpot. | The dragon moves, so searching without quest guidance may take longer. You still need two full stamina circles. |
If you have started quests and need to check their hints, Nintendo says they can be reviewed in the Adventure Log. Use that as a reminder rather than assuming a quest is a prerequisite.
Find and board the Light Dragon
The sword sits on the Light Dragon’s head. Its route changes as it travels around the world, so do not rely on a single fixed coordinate as a guaranteed location. GameSpot recommends using a nearby Skyview Tower or another high vantage point to get close enough to glide onto it.
Rank #2
- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
- Look for the Light Dragon from a Skyview Tower or another high point.
- When it is within reach, glide onto its body and make your way toward its head.
- If you are following the Deku Tree route, use its guidance to help locate and track the dragon.
Pull the Master Sword
- Stand at the dragon’s head beside the sword.
- Interact with the sword when prompted.
- Keep holding the interaction button through the stamina challenge. With two full stamina circles, you can complete the pull.
Do not count stamina-restoring meals as a substitute for the required circles. They can help with ordinary stamina recovery while exploring, but GameSpot’s guide specifies the two-circle requirement for the pull.
Quick Recap
Rank #3
If you cannot pull it yet
- You run out of stamina during the pull: Build your permanent stamina capacity to two full circles by exchanging Lights of Blessing for stamina vessels at a Goddess Statue. Nintendo’s guidance is that four Lights of Blessing can be exchanged for a stamina vessel or heart container.
- You cannot find the dragon: It moves around the world. Try again from a high vantage point, or pursue the Deku Tree and quest guidance to help track it.
- You are unsure which quest to follow: Neither Dragon’s Tears nor cleansing the Deku Tree is a stated prerequisite in GameSpot’s guide. The practical requirements are reaching the Light Dragon and meeting the stamina gate.
