Because the item is timed, activate it when you are ready to catch Pokémon for most of its active window, rather than before you have encounters available. The official Community Day guide recommends a Star Piece if you plan to catch a lot. The practical takeaway is to line up a steady catching opportunity first; the sources do not establish a guaranteed Stardust total for a session.
Catch weather-boosted Pokémon when available
Pokémon GO awards extra Stardust for catching Pokémon whose types are boosted by the current in-game weather. Check the weather indicator and prioritize eligible encounters while that boost is active. Niantic notes that weather information in the game can occasionally be incorrect or unavailable, so use the in-game indicator rather than assuming local conditions guarantee a boost.

Keep the daily catch streak
The first Pokémon you catch each local day awards 600 bonus Stardust. Catching one Pokémon on seven consecutive days awards 3,000 Stardust on the seventh day, according to Niantic’s Daily Bonuses page. A game day runs from midnight to midnight in your local time.

Make at least one catch each day to preserve the streak. If your session starts after local midnight, that first catch also secures the daily bonus.
Check current bonuses before spending an item
Before activating a Star Piece, open Today View in the game and check what event bonuses are currently active and whether an event changes the item’s duration. Event bonuses, dates, and availability can vary by time and region. There is no single Stardust event bonus established for every player, so rely on the in-game information and current official announcements rather than assuming an older event’s rules still apply.
