First identify which kind of “lag” you’re seeing: low or uneven frame rate, network delay or packet loss, or slow input-to-screen response. VALORANT’s own instability indicators and performance graphs help separate those problems, and each needs a different fix. Start at Settings > General > Other > Instability Indicators; if an indicator appears often or stays on screen, turn on the relevant graphs under Settings > Video > Stats.
Identify the problem before changing settings
VALORANT’s upper-right instability indicators are useful clues, not definitive remote diagnoses. Pair them with the game’s performance graphs and what you observe during a match.
| What you notice | What to check | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Choppy animation or abrupt frame drops | Low Client FPS indicator; FPS and CPU/GPU performance graphs | Reduce competing processes, inspect the graphs, then lower selected graphics settings. |
| Erratic movement, packet loss, or actions delayed or disregarded | Network Problem indicator; incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs | Restart network equipment, test a wired connection, and investigate the router or ISP if needed. |
| Server-resolved behavior seems inconsistent for players across a match | Low Server FPS indicator | Recognize that this is server-side; monitor it and report persistent issues to Riot. |
| Clicks feel slow despite apparently stable visuals | System-latency concern; whether NVIDIA Reflex is available on your setup | Test Reflex as an optional latency setting, without assuming it will fix stuttering. |
What the indicators mean
- Low Client FPS: The game’s rendered frame rate is reduced. Riot says a warning-level indication can involve occasional dropped frames; a critical indication can make the image severely reduced and appear to hop between frames.
- Network Problem: Riot associates this with connection trouble, commonly consistent packet loss or brief disconnects. Movement can look erratic, and actions may be delayed or disregarded by the server.
- Low Server FPS: The game server’s frame rate is reduced, which can affect players in the match and make server-resolved behavior inconsistent. This is not a local PC component to upgrade; Riot identifies server optimization as its responsibility.
Brief indicators that disappear quickly may be safe to ignore, according to Riot’s VALORANT Game and Network Instability Basics. If they appear frequently or remain visible, use Settings > Video > Stats to display performance stats or graphs.
Fix low or uneven client FPS
Try these steps in order, checking whether the symptom changes after each one. Riot notes that the cause varies between machines, so use the CPU and GPU graphs rather than assuming a particular setting or component is responsible.

- Close competing applications. Exit other running programs that may be using system resources. Riot’s frame-rate guide says, “Clearing up background processes can ensure other programs aren’t fighting for the spotlight against your game.”
- Inspect performance graphs. Enable the in-game graphs under Settings > Video > Stats and observe CPU and GPU activity while the slowdown occurs. The graphs help investigate which resource may be limiting performance; they do not by themselves prove that a specific part needs replacing.
- Lower selected graphics settings. Go to Settings > Video > Graphics Quality and reduce Material, Texture, Detail, and UI Quality. Riot also suggests testing with Improve Clarity, Experimental Sharpening, Bloom, Distortion, and Cast Shadows disabled. Menu labels can change, so check the current client.
- Check VALORANT’s current requirements. Compare your system with the requirements linked from Riot’s Troubleshooting Frame Rate Issues (PC) guide. The live requirements page is preferable to relying on old numbers.
- Update graphics drivers and Windows. Riot includes both among its general frame-rate troubleshooting steps.
- Try a clean boot to check for software conflicts. This is a diagnostic test for background-process interference, not proof that a background app caused the issue.
- Gather evidence before considering hardware changes. Note your PC specifications, CPU/GPU graph readings, and whether the problem also occurs in other games. The cited guidance does not identify a universal component to upgrade.
Meeting recommended requirements does not guarantee steady performance with every setting maxed out; Riot notes that maximum graphics settings can still slow a system that meets those specifications. No single adjustment is established as a guaranteed FPS increase.
Fix network delay and packet loss
If the Network Problem indicator appears, or packet-loss graphs show loss, troubleshoot the connection rather than changing graphics quality. Riot says high-quality wireless and most wired connections should have near-zero packet loss at all times.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- Show the packet-loss graphs. Enable incoming and outgoing packet-loss stats under Settings > Video > Stats, then check them when the problem occurs.
- Restart network equipment. Restart your router and other network devices, then test again.
- Try a wired connection if possible. An Ethernet connection can help you test whether Wi-Fi contributes to instability. This is a network diagnostic, not a way to improve local rendering performance.
- Consider network buffering as a trade-off. VALORANT’s buffering option can reduce the game’s demands on the connection, but smoother behavior may come at the cost of added latency. It does not repair a faulty connection.
- Investigate the router or contact your ISP if the issue persists. If a wired test does not help, use router diagnostics and share the available connection data with your internet provider.
Riot’s instability guide covers packet-loss checks and connection troubleshooting. Its netcode explanation describes how the client predicts local movement while the server remains authoritative. When the client and server disagree, corrections can look like jumping or rubber-banding; that experience is not necessarily a frame-rate problem.
Reduce system input latency
Input latency is the time between an action and its appearance on screen. A higher FPS is a throughput measure; it does not by itself show that every part of the input-to-display path is fast.

If you have compatible NVIDIA hardware and the option is available in your game, test VALORANT’s NVIDIA Reflex Low-Latency Mode. NVIDIA describes Reflex as a technology intended to reduce system latency and documents the VALORANT setting in its Reflex guide. Treat it as a setup-dependent option, not a guaranteed fix for every form of input lag or stutter.
When the indicators point to a server issue
A Low Server FPS indicator concerns the server’s game frame rate, not the performance of your PC. Since Riot identifies server optimization as its responsibility, changing graphics quality or replacing a local component is not a targeted response to that indicator. Note when it occurs and report persistent issues to Riot.

What to do if the cause is still unclear
The categories can overlap: a match can involve both an unstable connection and reduced client FPS, for example. Record which indicators appear, what the FPS and packet-loss graphs show at the time, your PC specifications, and whether other games have the same symptom. That evidence helps distinguish a local performance limit from a connection or server problem without guessing at a hardware upgrade.
