On PC, use Fortnite’s built-in Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity rendering mode. It does not require an NVIDIA graphics card: select Performance in the Video settings, apply the change, and restart the game. The low-detail look players call “potato graphics” is Epic’s intended low-fidelity mode, not a separate NVIDIA feature.
Enable Performance Mode on PC
- Open Fortnite’s menu and choose Settings. The menu icon’s position can vary between versions.
- Open the Video tab.
- Under Rendering Mode, select Performance (also described by Epic as Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity).
- Apply the change, then restart Fortnite when prompted.
Epic’s Performance Mode instructions also describe removing high-resolution textures to reduce the installation size by over 15 GB; the precise amount can vary, so check the current installer options and available storage.
What Performance Mode changes—and what it cannot promise
Performance Mode prioritizes lower graphical fidelity to help the game run on less powerful PCs. Epic says results depend on the hardware and may be slight or nonexistent. Its examples are specific 720p Squads comparisons, not typical results or a guarantee:
| Epic’s example PC | Before Performance Mode | With Performance Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Intel i5-8265U laptop with Intel UHD Graphics 620 | 24 FPS | 61 FPS |
| AMD A10-5745M laptop with Radeon HD 8610G | 18 FPS | 45 FPS |
Epic does not state a publication year for these examples. Its low-FPS guidance cautions that the outcome depends on the player’s hardware; avoid treating the example frame rates as a forecast for your PC.

Do you need NVIDIA?
No. Performance Mode is an in-game rendering choice, not an NVIDIA-only technology. Epic says a dedicated GPU is not required for the mode, and its PC requirements include integrated graphics examples such as Intel HD 4000 and AMD Radeon Vega 8. A dedicated GPU may help balance system load and improve smoothness, but it is not required to select Performance Mode.

For graphics problems
Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guide recommends setting Quality Presets to Low and 3D Resolution to 100%. These are additional graphics settings, not the Rendering Mode selector.
For low-quality textures
If textures look unexpectedly poor rather than simply low-detail, follow Epic’s separate guide for low-quality graphics or textures. Its suggestions include lowering the frame-rate limit and starting a new game; those steps are distinct from enabling Performance Mode.

For hitches and stutters
Epic says an SSD or at least 6 GB of RAM may help older machines fit the game in memory and reduce hitches or stutters. This is conditional troubleshooting, not a universal minimum, a route to potato graphics, or a promise of higher FPS. Epic lists 16 GB RAM or higher in its recommended PC specifications. Check the computer’s existing capacity, upgrade compatibility, and whether memory or storage is actually a bottleneck before buying anything.

Do not confuse lower-fidelity rendering with image-reconstruction options. Depending on hardware and settings, Epic lists TSR, NVIDIA DLSS, Intel XeSS, FXAA, SMAA, and TAA as options in its anti-aliasing and super-resolution guide. That page currently says AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is not available as an in-game option. Availability can change; consult the linked guide for current support. None of these options is necessary to enable Performance Mode.
