Hold the item you want to enchant in your selected hotbar slot, then run /enchant <player> <enchantmentName> [level]. The command affects the selected item of the targeted player. In Bedrock Edition, for example, /enchant @p sharpness 5 targets the nearest player and requests Sharpness V. Cheats must be enabled in Bedrock.
How to use the command in Bedrock Edition
- Enable cheats in the world and make sure you have permission to run commands. Bedrock’s official command reference lists cheats as required and the permission level as Game Directors.
- Put the item you want to enchant in your selected hotbar slot.
- Open the chat or command interface for your platform.
- Enter
/enchant <player> <enchantmentName> [level]. Replace the placeholders with a player name or target selector, an enchantment identifier, and—if needed—a level. - For example,
/enchant @p sharpness 5targets the nearest player and requests Sharpness at level 5. The accepted level depends on the enchantment and game rules.
Microsoft’s Bedrock stable /enchant reference describes the command as adding an enchantment to a player’s selected item. It documents both a named enchantment argument and an integer ID form: /enchant <player: target> <enchantmentName: enchant> [level: int] or /enchant <player: target> <enchantmentId: int> [level: int].

Java and Bedrock syntax are not interchangeable
The syntax above is documented for Bedrock Edition; check the command suggestions in your own game if the identifier or level is rejected. Java Edition uses registered resource-location identifiers for enchantments, according to the available Minecraft Wiki /enchant reference. That reference also describes Java’s /enchant command as enforcing maximum levels and item compatibility. Those details can vary by game version, so verify them against a reference for the release you are playing.
Do not assume /enchant can put any enchantment on any item or ignore normal level limits. The cited Java reference describes compatibility and maximum-level checks; the Bedrock command reference documents an enchantment argument rather than an unrestricted item-editing command.

Fix common command errors
- Unknown or invalid enchantment: Check the identifier format for your edition and version. Bedrock accepts a documented name or integer ID; Java uses registered resource locations.
- The wrong item changes, or nothing happens: Check that the selector targets the intended player and that player has the desired item in their selected slot.
- The command is unavailable: In Bedrock, enable cheats and confirm that your permission level allows commands.
- Invalid level or incompatible item: Check the enchantment’s allowed maximum and whether it applies to the item. The Java
/enchantcommand enforces these normal restrictions according to the cited reference.
Finding a valid enchantment identifier
The Bedrock command page documents the argument formats but does not provide a complete current list of enchantment names and levels. Use the in-game command suggestions for your edition and version, or consult a version-matched reference. Minecraft Help’s All Enchantments in Minecraft page is another place to check, though its current contents may not be available in every context.
