The most dependable survival option is a spider or cave spider spawner farm: contain the spawning area, use water to move spiders to a controlled kill point, then collect their drops by hand or with hoppers. Exact layouts can vary by Minecraft edition and version, so treat any dimensions as a design example rather than a universal blueprint.
What you need before building
Find a spider spawner or cave spider spawner. Cave spider spawners are found in mineshafts, often near cobwebs. If you need starter string, break cobwebs with a sword; shears collect the cobweb block instead.
- Light the spawner temporarily while you work, and clear nearby cobwebs that could obstruct the build.
- Bring blocks to seal openings, water for transport, and a way to kill the spiders.
- For automatic item collection, bring hoppers and a chest. A manual kill point is simpler and lets you collect experience.
Build a contained spawner room
One cave spider tutorial uses a 9×3×9 room, with the spawner centered, four blocks between it and each side wall, and one block of clearance above and below. This is that tutorial’s layout, not a universal requirement for every edition or version.
Cave spiders are small and can climb walls, so seal gaps and keep the work area protected. Keep the spawner lit while constructing the room and collection route; remove the construction torches only when the farm is ready to operate.

Move spiders to a controlled kill point
Use flowing water to carry spiders toward one edge of the room, then funnel the flow into a trench or channel leading to the grinder. The tutorial’s layout distributes water across one side and gathers it in a trench at the opposite side. Make sure the route brings spiders to the kill area without opening an escape path into your work space.
Choose how to kill and collect them
Manual kill point
A protected chamber where you kill spiders yourself is the straightforward option. It gives you access to experience as well as drops, but requires you to operate the farm rather than leave it unattended.

Automatic item collection
For unattended collection, one cave spider design uses an iron golem grinder with hoppers under the floor feeding a chest; campfire-based approaches are another option. Automatic designs need maintenance and secure containment: golems can take damage and eventually die, and a grinder that works in one layout should not be assumed safe in another.
Activate and troubleshoot the farm
- Finish the room, water channel, kill point, and collection system while the spawner is lit.
- Remove the construction torches once the route is ready, then stay close enough for the spawner to function.
- If drops stop arriving, check that you are nearby, the room is dark enough for spawning, spiders are not piling up somewhere other than the grinder, and water is flowing toward the kill area.
Check your edition and version
The basic idea—spawn spiders, move them, kill them, and store the drops—can be adapted, but exact dimensions and redstone circuits do not necessarily transfer between Java and Bedrock. Microsoft’s redstone documentation describes differences including Java quasi-connectivity, which Bedrock does not support, as well as differences in block updates and piston behavior. If a design depends on pistons, redstone timing, or other precise circuitry, use instructions made for your edition and game version.

Other ways to get string
Minecraft’s official string overview lists spiders, cobwebs, fishing, loot from jungle temples, desert pyramids and dungeons, and cat gifts as sources. Fishing and structure loot are incidental rather than a dependable bulk farm; a spider spawner is the clearest repeatable route in this guide. The overview also lists string as a crafting ingredient for wool, looms, leads, fishing rods, bows, crossbows, and scaffolding, and notes that fisherman villagers can trade for it.

Tripwire does not generate string
String can be placed between two tripwire hooks to make a detector line, but that uses string rather than producing it. The official tripwire hook overview explains that a creature crossing the line triggers a redstone pulse; shears can cut tripwire safely.
