Grasp of Avarice is a three-player Destiny 2 dungeon built around a repeating loop: collect special engrams to gain Burdened by Riches, then deposit them at a crystal before the timer expires. Scorch Cannons power Fallen machinery, and each boss becomes vulnerable after its crystal has absorbed the required engrams. Follow the route below from the Loot Cave to Captain Avarokk.

Before you start

Bungie describes Grasp of Avarice as a dungeon inspired by the Cosmodrome’s Loot Caves. Dungeons are endgame PvE activities for fireteams of up to three, and Bungie’s activities page lists Grasp of Avarice among the available dungeons. Check the activity card in-game before launch for current Power requirements, modifiers, and reward details; Bungie’s page does not specify those values. Bungie’s 30th Anniversary Guide provides the dungeon’s historical content context, while the activities page covers the activity category and availability.

The key mechanic is consistent throughout the dungeon: yellow engrams add Burdened by Riches, a timed debuff. Deposit the stacks at the relevant crystal before the timer runs out. A Scorch Cannon’s charged shot is also reused: hold fire to charge the missile, then release it at an egg-shaped Fallen generator to activate machinery. A detailed route is available in GameSpot’s Grasp of Avarice walkthrough.

Enter the Loot Cave

  1. Defeat the enemies emerging from the Loot Cave and collect the yellow engrams they drop. Each one adds Burdened by Riches.
  2. Carry the engrams into the cave and deposit them at the white crystal. Depositing clears your burden and advances the encounter.
  3. Repeat the collection-and-deposit cycle before the debuff timer expires. The crystal grows as you deposit; when the encounter opens the way down, proceed into the dungeon.

Cross the trapped traversal section

Move carefully through the trap route. Some floor plates and switches trigger hazards, so do not treat every visible control as safe. Follow the open, safe path through the hatch and fan rooms rather than rushing across suspicious plates.

In the numbered-door room, clear the rooms in sequence until you reach a Scorch Cannon Vandal. Take the cannon and use a charged shot on the egg-shaped Fallen generator to open the fourth door. This generator interaction is the pattern to remember for later encounters.

Defeat Phry’zhia the Insatiable

  1. Before entering the arena, identify cover and be ready for sustained incoming fire. Kill the Fallen Vandal carrying a Scorch Cannon.
  2. Use the cannon to open either side room, then clear its enemies and collect their engrams.
  3. Return to the crystal at the front of the arena and deposit 25 engrams. This removes Phry’zhia’s shield and starts the damage window.
  4. Attack the Ogre while its shield is down, using cover when the vulnerability window ends. Repeat the cannon, engram, and deposit cycle until it is defeated.

Watch for Thralls while depositing. Weapon and seasonal-mod suggestions in older walkthroughs date from 2021 and should not be treated as current build recommendations; the live sandbox and activity modifiers can change.

Complete the Sparrow mine run

Ride through Mines A, B, C, and D before their timers expire. Red-and-white lights along the route extend the mine timers, so cross them while keeping enough speed to reach the next mine. After Mine D, dismount and clear the remaining enemies. Hidden chests and lore collectibles along the route are optional, not requirements for completing the run.

Clear the Fallen Shield encounter

The Fallen Shield arena is a chain of islands connected by launchers. Scorch Cannons power the launcher generators, and the launcher must be aimed at the next destination before it is activated.

  1. Reach an island with a shielded Servitor. Clear nearby enemies and collect engrams to charge its local crystal; the walkthrough specifies 20 engrams for this deposit.
  2. Destroy the Servitor after charging the crystal. Push its shell beneath a launcher.
  3. Aim the launcher at one of the four lit shield nodes, then use a Cannon-powered shot to launch the Servitor shell into that node.
  4. Repeat the crystal, Servitor, and launcher sequence until all four nodes are destroyed. The central chest then appears.

Defeat Captain Avarokk the Covetous

  1. Use a Scorch Cannon on a generator attached to one of the rings. Activating a generator releases engrams from wall containers around the arena.
  2. Collect the engrams and deposit 60 at the central crystal. Avarokk’s shield drops, opening a short damage window.
  3. Attack Avarokk while the shield is down, then return to the generator-and-engram loop if he survives the phase.
  4. Kill the two lieutenants—the flying sniper Shank and the Marauder—so they cannot make it harder to cross the arena or deposit safely.

A walkthrough reviewed August 1, 2026, corroborates the 60-engram deposit and overall full-clear sequence; see Vaexil’s Grasp of Avarice guide. Current modifiers, Power, and reward rules are still best checked on the live activity card.

Solo or fireteam?

Bungie frames dungeons for fireteams of up to three and notes that they usually include a solo-completion challenge. Solo, you must handle cannon use, enemy control, engram collection, and deposits yourself. In a group, divide those jobs: one player can handle the cannon or call the route while others clear enemies and collect engrams, then regroup before a damage phase. No authoritative completion-time or difficulty comparison between solo and group clears is established by the cited sources.
