How to Make a D&D Character: Choosing a Class, Species, and Background

In the 2024 D&D rules, class shapes how you play, background supplies ability-score increases and an Origin feat, and species contributes heritage traits. Here’s how to choose a combination that fits.

To make a D&D character using the 2024 rules, choose a class for your play style, then choose a background that supports its key ability and gives you useful proficiencies and an Origin feat. Pick a species for its traits and story. There is no universally best class, species, and background combination: the strongest choice depends on the character you want to play and the campaign you are joining.

Which D&D rules does this guide use?

This guide uses the 2024 Player’s Handbook character-creation rules. D&D Beyond labels those updated rules “5.5e” on its platform and calls the 2014 rules “5e”; both versions remain supported and compatible, according to its March 2, 2026 editor’s note. The terms and character-origin choices differ, so follow the rules version of the book or digital builder you are using rather than mixing the two.

The 2024 rules use species where many players still say or search for “race.” This guide uses “species” for rules-facing advice and “race” only as familiar legacy terminology.

How do you make a D&D character?

The 2024 Basic Rules give a five-part creation sequence. You can record the result on a digital or printed character sheet, or on plain paper.

  1. Choose a class. This defines your vocation, core features, and favored tactics.
  2. Determine your origin. Choose a background, species, and languages.
  3. Determine ability scores. Use the method specified by your table or the rules you are following.
  4. Choose an alignment.
  5. Fill in the remaining character-sheet details.

The order is a useful guide, not a demand that you invent the character without a concept. If you already know the character’s story, use it to inform your choices while checking that the mechanics fit together.

Choose a class for the way you want to play

Class is usually the most mechanically significant choice: its features shape how your character approaches challenges and develops over time. Before settling on one, ask what you most want to do during play: fight up close, use magic, solve problems with skills, support allies, or blend several roles. Then look at the class’s primary ability and complexity. Avoid choosing a class only because an old species-to-class association sounds traditional; 2024 species no longer determine ability-score increases.

Choose a background that supports your class

In the 2024 rules, a background represents formative place and occupation. It supplies three ability scores from which you can increase one by 2 and another by 1, or increase each of the three by 1. These increases cannot raise a score above 20. A background also gives an Origin feat, skill and tool proficiencies, and starting equipment.

First check whether the background offers the class’s primary ability. Then weigh its feat and proficiencies: a useful feat for your intended role or skills that support your plans outside combat may matter more than squeezing out the neatest ability spread.

The Basic Rules illustrate ability-score options with these backgrounds. This is a set of examples, not a complete catalogue of backgrounds from every D&D book.

Ability score Example background options in the Basic Rules
Strength Soldier
Dexterity Criminal, Soldier
Constitution Criminal, Sage, Soldier
Intelligence Acolyte, Criminal, Sage
Wisdom Acolyte, Sage
Charisma Acolyte

If you are adapting an older background that has no ability adjustments, the Basic Rules say to use the same +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 method, ignoring any ability increases supplied by an older species. If that background lacks an Origin feat, choose one.

Choose a species for its traits and story

Species represents heritage and provides innate traits. Since ability-score increases now come from backgrounds, you can choose a species for its traits, character concept, or both without the species-based ability advantage or penalty associated with older rules. That makes class and background synergy the more direct mechanical pairing, while leaving more freedom to match any species with any class.

Think about whether a species trait complements the role you want, and whether the heritage suggests a character or story you would enjoy. Do not treat a species as a required match for a class.

How to judge a class, species, and background combination

There is no official ranking of every possible combination. A practical way to compare options is to weigh the following factors together:

  • Class and ability options: Does the background let you improve the class’s primary ability, or are you deliberately prioritizing a different score or a broader spread?
  • Feat and proficiencies: Does the Origin feat support your intended role? Do the skills and tools help with the challenges you want to tackle?
  • Species traits: Do the traits contribute to your preferred play or provide a story hook you like?
  • Campaign and concept: A dungeon-focused game and a socially focused game may reward different priorities. Your character should also make sense to you, not just look optimal on paper.

For example, D&D Beyond’s official creation guide walks through a Fighter with the Soldier background: the background supports Strength and Constitution, grants Athletics and Intimidation, and provides the Savage Attacker Origin feat. The guide pairs that character with a Dwarf species. This is a worked example of connecting class needs with a background’s options and a species choice—not a rule that every Fighter should be a Soldier or a Dwarf. See D&D Beyond’s character creation guide.

What options are in the 2024 Player’s Handbook?

D&D Beyond’s overview of the 2024 Player’s Handbook lists 16 backgrounds, 10 species, and 75 feats. The handbook adds Aasimar, Goliath, and Orc as species, and its backgrounds include ability adjustments and a specific Origin feat. Those counts describe that handbook alone, not every option published across D&D books. The 2024 Player’s Handbook overview is a useful reference if you want to see the scope of its options.
