For an early Lynel encounter, head to Ploymus Mountain east of Zora’s Domain. The Lynel there is tied to the Zora Divine Beast quest, but defeating it is optional. Before engaging, identify its weapon and mane, bring durable weapons and healing food, and focus on timed dodges, guarded openings, and mounting opportunities rather than trading blows.
Where to find a Lynel
Ploymus Mountain near Zora’s Domain
Nintendo identifies Ploymus Mountain in Lanayru as Lynel territory. It is the clearest named location for a first encounter. A 2018 GameFAQs guide identifies the Lynel there as part of the Zora quest, but says you do not have to defeat it to advance. Nintendo’s Lanayru region feature and Adreos0’s Lynel guide describe the location and encounter.
Other regions
For a wider hunt, Adreos0’s 2018 guide lists starting Lynel locations by Sheikah Tower region, including Hebra West Summit, North Tabantha Snowfield, Gerudo Summit, Oseira Plains, Riola Spring, Lanayru Road–East Gate, Akkala Wilds, Deplian Badlands, Drenan Highlands, and Coliseum Ruins. Its roster counts 22 Lynels in normal mode and 23 in Master Mode at the start of the game. These are figures from that guide’s listed starting roster, not a version-by-version official map; it also identifies regions with no Lynels in that roster.
Check the Lynel before you fight
Strength tier
The guide distinguishes red-, blue-, white-, and silver-maned Lynels. It says gold Lynels appear with The Master Trials DLC. As guide-reported values, it lists 2,000 HP for red, 3,000 for blue, 5,000 for silver, and 7,500 for gold Lynels. These are not independently tested or officially confirmed figures. A Lynel’s color is a useful warning about its strength, but location and progression matter: the guide reports that the Ploymus Lynel remains red as the game progresses, as do special encounters at Hyrule Castle gatehouses.

Melee weapon
Lynels may carry a sword and shield, a spear, or a crusher/club. Their attacks differ, so watch the weapon and animation before choosing how to evade. The GameFAQs guide describes the individual patterns and is a useful reference if you need to recognize a particular move.
Prepare for a difficult encounter
- Bring durable weapons and a shield. Nintendo notes that weapons wear out over time, and the Lynel guide recommends carrying enough weapons for the fight.
- Pack healing food. Nintendo says food can restore health or boost Link’s stats; bring enough to recover from mistakes.
- Carry a bow and arrows. They are useful equipment to have, but do not assume you can safely fight at range: the guide says Lynels use their bows when Link is distant or terrain prevents them from reaching him.
- Choose your approach. If you are ready to engage, closing distance can discourage bow attacks. Keep moving; the guide describes an arcing bow attack, so terrain or cover should not be treated as guaranteed protection.
Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild game page covers the game’s weapon wear and food systems. Its Explorer’s Guide is available as a free download from that page.

How to fight a Lynel
Use timed dodges for openings
Use the game’s Perfect Dodge timing to aim for a Flurry Rush. Do not mash dodge: wait for the attack, then evade at the right moment. The guide notes that a side jump against an unarmed charge can create an opening, while running sideways can avoid fireballs. These are possible responses, not guaranteed openings for every attack or weapon type.
Guard selectively
A properly timed Perfect Guard can halt many Lynel attacks, according to the guide, but at least one attack cannot be Perfect Guarded. Learn the move first and avoid treating parrying as a universal answer.

Mount when the Lynel is stunned
A stunned Lynel can be mounted and struck. The guide also describes approaching unseen from above with the paraglider as a way to mount. Mounted strikes do not consume the equipped weapon’s durability, according to the guide. Link is thrown off after taking enough damage or when his stamina runs out, so use the opening promptly.
Know when to disengage
If a fight is going badly, the guide says teleporting is the reliable way to abort an engaged encounter; running or climbing away can draw pursuit or bow fire. This is tactical advice from the guide, not an official Nintendo rule.

What Lynels drop
Adreos0’s guide says Lynels drop body-part materials and weapons, and reports that each Lynel drops a bow on defeat. It says Silver Lynels may also drop gems or star fragments, while Hyrule Castle Lynels produce chests instead of the usual drops. Treat these as guide-reported reward patterns, not a guarantee that every Lynel yields every item.
Drops and difficulty depend on the encounter, tier, game mode, and progression. The guide says many Lynels change tier as Divine Beasts are completed and Lynels are defeated, while some encounters remain fixed, and that Lynels respawn on Blood Moons. It treats normal mode and Master Mode separately, so do not assume one color or reward map applies to every situation.

Sources and scope
Nintendo’s official pages support the broad game context, weapon wear, and Ploymus Mountain’s association with Lynels. The specific roster, combat advice, HP values, drops, and progression details above come from Adreos0’s GameFAQs guide, updated March 10, 2018. The guide is useful for practical details, but its figures and location roster should be understood as its published account rather than official Nintendo statistics.
