Reach Rank 5 to unlock Ranger. In a match, open the call-in menu, choose Ranger if it is available, select a delivery location, and confirm the call-in.
How to call Ranger into a match
- Unlock Ranger: Reach Rank 5. EA identifies this as the unlock point in its Ranger guide.
- Open the call-in tablet: EA lists the default inputs as B on PC, hold RB on Xbox, or hold R1 on PlayStation. The platform guide explains how to select a call-in and then choose its delivery location.
- Select Ranger: Choose it from the call-in options, pick a delivery point, and confirm. Ranger may not appear as an option in every match or situation.
- Give Ranger orders: Once it arrives, use the in-game prompts to direct it. EA’s guide lists controls for ordering it to stay and defend, and for directing it to a location or bringing it back. Controls may differ if remapped or changed, so follow the current in-game prompts if the listed inputs do not match your setup.
Why Ranger might not be available

EA describes map, mode, team-budget, cooldown, and limited-availability constraints for the call-in system in its Battlefield 2042 briefing. The cited material does not establish a current Ranger count or cooldown duration, so there is no single number or wait time to rely on.
What Ranger does
Ranger is a support unit called in through the match’s call-in system; it is not a Specialist-specific gadget. EA says it is neither a Specialty nor a Trait and is not unique to one Specialist. It follows and protects its caller, and can be directed to scout, stay and defend, or return and follow. It is a light anti-infantry unit, not an invulnerable companion: enemy fire, explosives, and EMP can destroy it.
