Prepare for heat and cave enemies before you go; not every Dry Valley cave is a lava cave.
Where to find Obsidian
Explore the Dry Valley for caves, then inspect their walls for dark-purple Obsidian rocks. LEGO’s cave guide says lava caves contain Obsidian, while its resource guide places the material in Dry Valley caves. A Dry Valley cave is the right place to search, but not every cave there is a lava cave.
Caves are marked by large, round mounds of gray rock with entrances. Approaching one adds a mountain icon to your map. Large cave systems may have multiple entrances or winding tunnels, so keep track of how you entered and the route back.
Prepare for cave heat and enemies
Dry Valley caves can be hot. LEGO recommends Cool-Headed Charms and Snowberries or Snowberry Shakes for heat protection. Lava caves can also contain Sand Spiders, Sand Scorpions, Sand Rollers, and Mine Skeletons carrying Dynamite. Bring food and suitable gear before heading underground.

Bring a Rare Pickaxe or better
A Rare Pickaxe is the minimum tier LEGO specifies for mining Obsidian. Its recipe requires an upgraded Crafting Bench, 3 Flexwood Rods, and 3 Sand Claws. To gather those ingredients, LEGO says to harvest Dry Valley cacti with a Rare Forest Axe for Flexwood, and hunt desert Wolves for Sand Claws. See LEGO’s resource guide for the pickaxe and material details.
- Upgrade your Crafting Bench.
- Gather 3 Flexwood Rods and 3 Sand Claws.
- Craft a Rare Pickaxe, or bring a higher-tier pickaxe.
- Enter a Dry Valley cave and mine the dark-purple Obsidian rocks on the walls.
Turn Obsidian into Obsidian Slabs
Use a Stone Breaker to process Obsidian into Obsidian Slabs. These slabs are needed for crafting: LEGO’s tool guide lists 8 Obsidian Slabs among the Epic Pickaxe recipe materials, and its Glass guide lists 35 slabs for a Metal Smelter.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why older location advice may differ
Epic’s Storm Chasers update notes historically said Amber was swapped with Obsidian in desert cliffs and Amber was added to Grassland caves. Current LEGO resource and cave guides instead direct players to Dry Valley caves, including lava caves, for Obsidian. If an older guide points you to desert cliffs, check the current in-game conditions; the official guides do not establish Obsidian’s complete distribution across every world variant.
