Press the DualSense controller’s Options button and choose Pause if the game offers it. To leave the game, press the PS button and open Home—but displaying Home pauses only some games and apps.
Pause from the game’s menu
- While playing, press the controller’s Options button. Sony describes this button as opening the options menu. PlayStation Support’s PS5 button guide identifies the button and its function.
- If the game’s menu includes Pause, select it. The pause command is provided by the game; Sony’s controller guidance does not establish one pause command that works in every PS5 game.
Does the PS button pause the game?
One press of the PS button opens the Control Centre; holding it opens Home. If you want to leave the game, open Home and select the game from Games Home when you are ready to return. PlayStation Support notes that “Some games and apps are paused when you display the home screen,” so Home is not a reliable pause method for every game. What if you’re playing online?
The button guidance does not establish whether an online game stops its match, timers, or activity for other players when you open a menu or Home. If that matters, check the specific game’s pause behavior before stepping away.
