The steps depend on your Minecraft edition and whether you want to hide messages from one player or mute everyone. In Java multiplayer, use Social Interactions to hide a selected player’s chat. In Bedrock, use the Mute All Chat setting in Chat Settings.
Hide chat from one player in Java Edition
- While connected to a multiplayer server, press P to open the Social Interactions screen. P is the default key binding and can be changed in controls.
- Select the player whose chat you want to hide.
The hidden-player selection resets when you disconnect from that server. Minecraft introduced the screen as a way to hide chat from any player in multiplayer; see the Java Edition 1.16.4 release notes.

Mute all chat in Bedrock Edition
- Open the chat window.
- Select the gear icon beside the message input field to open Chat Settings.
- Turn on Mute All Chat.
This setting and path are described on Minecraft’s Bedrock accessibility help page. The page is in Portuguese and warns that its translation may contain AI errors, so the wording of labels can vary by language.
Opening chat on your device
If you need to open chat to reach its settings, the default control depends on your input method. Minecraft notes that controls can be customized in the options menu.

Java chat restrictions are a different option
Minecraft Java Edition 26.1 release notes say restricted message types are hidden and new messages of those types are discarded. This applies to restricted types, not necessarily all chat, and the chat screen can still be opened. The notes do not provide a complete menu path for a hide-all setting, so these restrictions should not be treated as instructions for muting every message. See the Java Edition 26.1 release notes.

Hiding chat versus changing how it looks
Accessibility options for chat text, such as size and color, change its appearance rather than hiding messages. Minecraft describes these options in its accessibility overview.
