On June 5, 2025, U.S. shoppers could try for a Nintendo Switch 2 in person at Target or Best Buy, but neither retailer guaranteed that every store would have a console for walk-ins. Target planned a pre-opening queue with tickets; Best Buy said nearly all its U.S. stores would open at 12:01 a.m. ET for preorder pickup and walk-in purchases. These are historical launch-day procedures, not current stock information.
Where shoppers could try to buy a Switch 2 in person
Nintendo released the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. The documented U.S. launch-day options below come from retailer announcements; they do not establish what any particular store had in stock.

How Target’s ticket system worked
- Arrive before the store opened and join the queue at the designated entrance.
- Receive a physical or digital ticket from a Target team member. Tickets reserved a product; distribution stopped when all tickets were claimed or ten minutes before opening.
- If ticketed, go to the electronics department to purchase and pick up the product.
Target said the console and Mario Kart World bundle would be available in stores on June 5 while supplies lasted. It limited purchases to one of each Switch 2 item per guest. Target’s announcement placed app and Target.com availability on June 6, so those were not launch-day in-store purchase routes.

What Best Buy announced for launch night
Best Buy said nearly all of its U.S. stores would open at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on June 5 for preorder pickup and walk-in purchases. Stores were expected to have a limited number of consoles, games, and accessories for walk-in customers. The announcement did not specify quantities by location or promise a console to everyone who arrived.
What the launch figures do—and do not—tell you
Target reported that its online preorders opened April 24, 2025, and sold out in less than two hours. That figure describes Target’s online preorders, not its in-store inventory.

Nintendo reported more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold worldwide during the first four days after release, calling it the highest global first-four-day sales level for any Nintendo hardware. This worldwide sales figure is not a U.S. retailer stock count.
