Side-step or roll: which should you use?
A single tap of X makes Kratos side-step; a double tap makes him roll on the default PlayStation layout. Point the movement stick toward the direction you want to evade.

Choose the shortest movement that clears the attack. Dodging backward can give an enemy room to escape your range, while moving away from one strike can put you in the path of another. Check the red directional threat arrows around Kratos as you move.
Read the attack ring before choosing your defense
The ring around an enemy’s attack indicates whether blocking is safe. A well-timed evade is the basic response to an attack you cannot block, but some attacks have other counters.

- Yellow ring: A well-timed block can parry the attack and leave the enemy open. Simply blocking can break Kratos’s guard.
- Red ring: The attack cannot be blocked or parried. Evade it, or interrupt the enemy with another available action.
- Double-blue ring: Double-tap L1 for Shield Strike to interrupt and stagger the enemy. Blocking alone will not stop this attack.
Time the evade to the attack
Watch the enemy’s movement and evade as the attack is about to connect. Dodging too early can leave Kratos exposed when the hit arrives; dodging too late can fail to clear it. PlayStation’s combat guide cautions that “Dodging too early or too late can be as bad as not dodging it at all.”
A raised shield slows movement and can leave Kratos vulnerable to attacks from behind. Rather than holding block or rolling automatically, read the attack, move just far enough to avoid it, then look for an opening to counter.

Adjust evade controls and assistance
God of War Ragnarök includes options for changing how evades feel. The controls below are documented for PlayStation; remapping or another platform’s layout may display different inputs. See PlayStation’s accessibility options for the available settings.

Control remapping is also supported, so you can choose inputs that are more comfortable.

Practice the timing
If you want to learn enemy timing without the pressure of a difficult fight, the PlayStation Store listing for God of War Ragnarök describes Practice Mode, control reminders, and adjustable difficulty. Use practice to recognize an attack’s wind-up and test whether a side-step or roll clears it.
