In Java Edition, a server or world operator can hide overhead name tags by putting players on a team and setting that team’s nametagVisibility to never. This Java team-command method does not work in Bedrock Edition. Also, an overhead name tag is different from Java’s Locator Bar, a separate HUD indicator.
Hide overhead name tags in Java Edition
A community-post example uses a team to control whether its members’ overhead name tags are visible. Run these commands in order, with permission to use team commands:
/team add invisNamecreates a team namedinvisName./team modify invisName nametagVisibility neversets that team’s name-tag visibility to never./team join invisName @ajoins all players currently in the world to the team.
The example comes from a Minecraft Feedback community post, not an official command reference: Minecraft Feedback: Hide name tags. The final command targets all players present when it is run; the post does not establish automatic assignment for players who join later, so apply the setting to new arrivals as needed.
What about Bedrock Edition?
Do not use the Java team commands as a Bedrock solution. Community discussion explicitly notes that this team-command approach does not work in Bedrock, and the available sources do not establish an official, world-host toggle to hide every player’s overhead name tag from everyone.

That is a limit of what is established in those sources, not proof that no add-on or server-side implementation exists. A Bedrock character’s displayed name is the gamertag associated with the Microsoft account, according to Minecraft Help’s username guidance; changing it changes the identity shown, not its visibility.
Overhead name tags versus the Locator Bar
The Locator Bar is a direction indicator in the Java HUD, not the name tag floating above a player. In the Java Edition 25w17a release notes, Mojang says servers can toggle it with the locatorBar gamerule. The notes also say crouching, wearing a carved pumpkin or specified mob or player heads, and using a Potion of Invisibility can keep a player from appearing on the Locator Bar. These behaviors concern that HUD indicator; the notes do not say they hide overhead name tags.

Mojang’s wording is explicit: “Crouching will hide the player, preventing them from appearing on the Locator Bar of other players.” See the Java Edition 25w17a release notes for the Locator Bar details.

Choose the right setting for your goal
- Hide overhead labels in Java: use the team visibility commands above.
- Hide or control the Locator Bar in Java: use its gamerule or the player actions described in the 25w17a notes; these are not overhead-name-tag controls.
- Hide overhead labels in Bedrock: the sources cited here do not establish an official built-in host setting for doing so.
- Change the name itself: Java uses the Java profile name, while Bedrock uses the Microsoft account gamertag. A name change is not a visibility setting; see Minecraft Help.
