You can move a Nintendo DS game’s normal in-game save between DraStic and DeSmuME. For DeSmuME, use its backup-memory import and export commands; for DraStic on Android, use the save location and file format supported by your installed version. First make an in-game save and keep an untouched copy of the original file. A save state is a separate emulator snapshot, not the transferable game save.
In-game saves and save states are different
An in-game save is the game’s own backup-memory data—the file you create from the game’s save menu. A save state captures the emulator’s broader running state and is not a substitute for that data. DeSmuME’s documentation distinguishes save states from in-game saves and recommends in-game saves for durability across emulator versions: DeSmuME documentation.
Transfer a save from DeSmuME to DraStic
- Save from inside the game. Open the game in DeSmuME and use its own save menu. Do not use Save State for this transfer.
- Export raw backup memory. In DeSmuME, choose File > Export Backup Memory and save the resulting
.savfile somewhere you can find it. The DeSmuME Windows Users Manual says this command exports the game’s state for use in other Nintendo DS emulators: DeSmuME Windows Users Manual. - Put the save where your DraStic version expects it. A July 2025 third-party guide reports the Android folder
/Android/data/com.dsemu.drastic/files/backup/and recommends a.dsvextension with a filename matching the ROM. These are guide-reported instructions, not confirmed universal behavior for current DraStic versions; check the app’s current save settings or import guidance if the folder or format differs: Android Authority’s DraStic save-file guide. - Verify the result. Keep the exported original unchanged before renaming or replacing anything. Start the same ROM in DraStic and check that the expected in-game save appears. If it does not, check the ROM and save names, folder, and the file format; a newly created DraStic in-game save can serve as a reference for its naming and location.
Do not assume that changing .sav to .dsv always converts the file. The DraStic guide’s naming advice does not establish how every app version handles raw saves. Follow the current app’s instructions or use a converter that explicitly supports the relevant formats.
Transfer a save from DraStic to DeSmuME
- Create a fresh in-game save. In DraStic, use the game’s save menu, then close the game cleanly. Do not substitute a save state.
- Copy the save and preserve the original. Move the file to your computer and make an untouched backup. Determine whether the file is raw
.savdata or a DeSmuME-style.dsvcontainer; an extension by itself does not prove the internal format. - Import it in DeSmuME. Open the matching game and wait until it reaches its main menu. Choose File > Import Backup Memory, select the save file, and reset the emulator after the import. DeSmuME documents this sequence in its user manual: DeSmuME Windows Users Manual.
- Check the game. After the reset, confirm that the expected in-game save loads. If the game starts from the beginning, troubleshoot the format, game match, and import timing before altering the source file.
DraStic-specific export and folder behavior can vary, and the available path and naming guidance above comes from a third-party guide rather than current official documentation reviewed here. If you cannot locate the file, use DraStic’s current save-management options or consult the app’s current instructions.

What the .sav and .dsv extensions mean
DeSmuME’s native backup-memory format is .dsv. Its Windows manual says DeSmuME can import .duc and raw .sav files, while File > Export Backup Memory writes a raw .sav intended for use with other Nintendo DS emulators: DeSmuME Windows Users Manual.
A DeSmuME .dsv is not simply raw save data with a different extension. The project’s format specification describes raw save data followed by a DeSmuME-specific footer. That footer begins with the 16-byte ASCII cookie |-DESMUME SAVE-| and includes metadata such as the written and padded sizes, save type, address-bus size, save size, and version: DeSmuME DSV format specification.

Do not try to convert a file by typing or appending the visible cookie. The rest of the footer contains binary fields, and a community discussion specifically warns that the visible string alone is insufficient: DeSmuME forum discussion about DSV files. Prefer DeSmuME’s own import/export commands or a converter that explicitly supports both formats.

- Confirm it is an in-game save. Save-state files are a different format and are not the backup-memory file these steps transfer.
- Check that the ROM matches. The save should belong to the same game and ROM. The reviewed documentation does not guarantee compatibility across regions or modified ROMs, so treat a mismatch as one possible cause rather than a confirmed diagnosis.
- Use DeSmuME’s import timing. Load the ROM, wait for the game’s main menu, import through File > Import Backup Memory, then reset.
- Check file contents, not just the extension. DeSmuME’s
.dsvincludes a footer; a raw.savdoes not. Renaming alone may not transform one into the other. - For DraStic, recheck the current location and filename rules. The Android folder and matching-name advice cited above comes from a July 2025 third-party guide and may not match every version.
A community converter README describes removing a DSV footer to produce raw SAV data and adding a DeSmuME footer to raw SAV data, but says its generated footer has not been checked against DeSmuME itself. Treat it as an unofficial option with that limitation, and preserve the original save: DS Save Converter README.
