For the 2005 PC Black Edition, install from the original game disc: insert Disc 1, choose INSTALL in the Autorun menu, and follow the prompts. If Autorun does not open, run D:autorun.exe, replacing D: with your CD/DVD drive letter. Keep the game disc available to launch the installed game.
Confirm you have the 2005 Black Edition
These steps apply to the PC version of Need for Speed: Most Wanted Black Edition released in 2005, not every game titled Most Wanted. EA’s current Most Wanted product page lists a release date of October 30, 2012; that listing is not evidence that the 2005 Black Edition is available digitally. Install from the original PC disc
- Close open programs before starting.
- Insert Disc 1 into the computer’s CD/DVD-ROM drive.
- When the Autorun menu appears, select INSTALL and follow the installer prompts.
- If Autorun does not appear, open the Windows Start menu’s Run dialog and enter
D:autorun.exe. ReplaceD:with the letter assigned to your optical drive. - When installation finishes, launch the game using its Start-menu shortcut. Keep the required game disc available.
These are the original manual’s PC-disc instructions. They describe the original installation environment and do not establish that the installer will work unchanged on every current Windows version.
What if you do not have the disc?
An EA forum response about the legacy Black Edition says it is not available in Origin and directs owners to use the disc copy. A separate forum reply says there is no legitimate platform where it can currently be bought and played, but that is community guidance rather than an official current catalog notice. Do not assume a digital listing is the 2005 Black Edition: check the edition and release year. EA Help’s EA app installation instructions explain how to install the launcher; they do not supply this game.

A secondhand original PC disc may be a route to the documented installation method, but current stock is not established. Before buying, confirm the listing is for the 2005 PC Black Edition, check the condition and completeness of the media, and ask whether any required key or packaging is included. If your computer has no optical drive
The manual’s installation method requires a CD/DVD-ROM drive. A compatible external USB optical drive may let a computer read the original disc, but compatibility of any specific drive-and-computer combination is not established.

The documented sources do not provide a verified, official compatibility recipe for installing and running this 2005 edition on current Windows versions. Compatibility settings, unofficial installers, disc-check workarounds, and downloads should not be treated as confirmed fixes. To narrow down a failure, note your Windows version, whether the installer opens, the exact error message, and whether the disc can be read.
