In Minecraft: Java Edition, hold Shift and left-click an item or stack in your inventory or an open container to quick-move it. For controllers and touchscreen, use the separate item controls described below; Java’s Shift-click shortcut is not established as universal.
Quick-move items in Java Edition
Open your inventory or a container, then hold Shift while left-clicking the item or stack. In an open container, this moves up to a stack between the container and your player inventory, according to Minecraft’s Java Edition hotkeys help.
On keyboard and mouse, press E to open your inventory. The same Shift-click action has specific uses in furnaces and crafting:
- Furnace: Shift-click an item or stack to move it to the corresponding inventory slot.
- Crafting output: Shift-click the output to craft as many as possible of the selected item, up to a stack, and move the crafted items into your inventory.
These behaviors are documented for Java Edition; they should not be assumed to work identically in every edition or for every recipe.

Quick-move with a controller
The general Minecraft controls guide lists these buttons for moving items around in the inventory:

Move items on touchscreen
Tap the … button at the right end of the hotbar to open the inventory and crafting screen, then tap items to interact with them. Minecraft’s controls guide does not describe a touchscreen equivalent of Java’s Shift-click shortcut.

If the listed control does not work
Minecraft controls vary by input method and can be customized. Check the in-game control settings or the prompts shown on screen if your buttons differ. The controls guide says its baseline controls are largely similar between Java and Bedrock, but it does not establish that the Java quick-move shortcut applies to Bedrock.
