To play co-op with a friend in Elden Ring, set the same multiplayer password, have the guest place a gold summon sign, and have the host use a Furlcalling Finger Remedy to reveal it. You can summon up to two co-op guests. Co-op also makes the host ordinarily vulnerable to invasions, while defeating a host as an invader grants runes—but the publisher does not state a fixed rune payout.
How to summon a friend in co-op
- Go online and set a matching password. Open the multiplayer menu and have both players enter the exact same multiplayer password. Password matching filters co-op signs and invitations to players using that password, helping friends find one another. It does not guarantee a connection if network or game conditions prevent it. The FromSoftware online manual describes password matching for co-op; Bandai Namco’s multiplayer introduction also explains friend passwords.
- Have the guest place a co-op sign. The guest uses a Tarnished’s Furled Finger to leave a gold sign, or sends the sign to a nearby activated summoning pool.
- Have the host reveal signs. The host uses a Furlcalling Finger Remedy. Available co-op signs then appear in the world.
- Summon the guest. The host selects the friend’s gold sign to bring them into the host’s world. A host can have up to two co-op guests.
Co-op can end if an area boss is defeated, a participant dies, someone disconnects, or a player uses the Finger Severer. The online manual cited here is FromSoftware’s PS5 manual; menu details and online-service requirements can vary by platform. The cited sources do not establish current subscription requirements for each platform.

Passwords, open matching, and who can join
A multiplayer password is useful when you want to summon a particular friend: players need the exact same password for their co-op signs and invitations to match. Without a password, the publisher’s description does not promise friend-only matching. A password is a matching filter, not a fix for connection problems or incompatible game conditions.
The multiplayer introduction describes sessions of up to four players. In ordinary co-op, that can mean the host and as many as two co-op guests, with the remaining player slot relevant to hostile multiplayer. The manual’s rules also allow the hostile guest limit to rise to two when the host uses Taunter’s Tongue; in that case, only one co-op guest may join.

Invasions: how to attack or invite an invader
Invasions target players, not ordinary enemies. An invader enters another player’s world with the objective of defeating the host. Under the manual’s standard rules, a host is ordinarily vulnerable to invasion while playing co-op.
Invading another player
Use the game’s invasion multiplayer items to seek another player’s world. If you defeat the host, Bandai Namco says you receive runes, a Furlcalling Finger Remedy, and a Rune Arc. The publisher calls the rune reward “hefty” but gives no amount, so there is no supported fixed payout to expect.

Allowing solo invasions
A host can use Taunter’s Tongue to allow invasions without a co-op partner. It increases the risk of being attacked and can allow up to two hostile guests; when two invaders are present, the host can have only one co-op guest.
Choosing a duel instead
For a deliberate PvP fight, a player can use the Duelist’s Furled Finger to leave a red sign for another player to activate. A duel sign is an opt-in challenge, unlike an invasion, where the invader enters a host’s world to try to defeat them. Bandai Namco explains both the duel sign and invasion rewards in its multiplayer introduction.

Can multiplayer earn you tons of runes?
Defeating a host as an invader awards runes, as well as a Furlcalling Finger Remedy and a Rune Arc. The publisher does not quantify the rune award, so treat invasions as a PvP reward rather than a predictable high-volume rune farm. The cited source does not establish that the payout is large enough to make repeated invasions an efficient farming method.
For rune-gain boosts, PC Gamer’s rune-farming guide identifies the Golden Scarab and Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot. It recommends defeating the bosses in the Abandoned Cave to obtain the Golden Scarab and describes purchase and crafting options for the consumable. These are secondary-source recommendations, not official guarantees; details may change with game updates, so check the current in-game descriptions and requirements before relying on a specific route or boost.
