To play Minecraft multiplayer on an Android or Apple mobile device, sign in with a Microsoft account, use a compatible Bedrock Edition release, then join a friend’s world, play over LAN, or connect to a server. The right method depends on whether you’re playing together online, on the same local network, or in a community server.
Before you connect: check accounts, editions, and permissions
- Use compatible editions. Minecraft on mobile is Bedrock Edition. You can join Bedrock games, but mobile Bedrock does not join Java Edition games directly. Update everyone to the latest release to avoid version mismatches. Minecraft Help’s multiplayer requirements covers editions and connection basics.
- Sign in on mobile. Minecraft’s instructions for connecting to a multiplayer game say Microsoft-account sign-in on Android and Apple devices enables crossplay. From the start screen, tap Sign In, tap Sign In in the window that opens, select or enter your Microsoft account, then choose Let’s Go.
- Allow multiplayer. The Microsoft account must have multiplayer permissions enabled. Child accounts may also need permissions for adding friends or online communication changed in Microsoft/Xbox family settings.
- Choose a connection route. A friend’s world needs its host online; LAN requires devices on the same network; a server requires a server that is available to join.
Choose how you want to play
| Route | Best when | What you need | Must the host be online? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friend’s online world | You want to join a friend’s current world | Minecraft friendship, compatible releases, internet, and multiplayer permission | Yes |
| LAN | Players are nearby and on the same local network | Same network; host enables multiplayer and LAN visibility | Yes; the host runs the world |
| Server | You want a community server or a saved server address | Server access and a compatible Bedrock release; address and port if adding it manually | The server must be available |
| Realm | You have an invitation to a hosted Realm | A Realm invitation and account permissions | No; a Realm guest can join without the owner online |
Join a friend’s online world
This is the simplest option when a friend has already started the world. Minecraft Help says both players must be Minecraft friends and online at the same time. The host must start the world with multiplayer enabled and remain online while other players use it. See Minecraft Help’s friend-world instructions.
- Have both players sign in and add each other as Minecraft friends.
- Ask the host to start the world with multiplayer enabled.
- On the joining device, open Play > Friends.
- Under Joinable Friends, select the host’s gamertag.
Play over LAN
LAN is for devices on the same local network. Minecraft Help’s LAN instructions require players to use the latest Minecraft version and devices that support LAN.
- On the host device, open Play, find the world, and tap its pencil icon to edit it.
- Open Multiplayer and enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world on the host device.
- On the other device, open Play > Worlds and select the world marked LAN.
If both players are friends and online, the game may offer online friend joining rather than LAN. You can still play together, but the connection will be over the internet.

Join or add a server
To join a listed server, open Play > Servers, choose a server, review its description, and select Play. Availability and any special access requirements depend on the server operator. Minecraft Help explains server connection requirements.
To enter a server address yourself, go to Play > Servers > Add Server and enter a server name and address. Add a port if the operator requires one. Minecraft Help lists 19132 as the default Bedrock port; use the specific address and port provided by the server operator if they differ.

Fix common multiplayer problems
- The world or server won’t appear: Update both players to the latest release and confirm they are using compatible Bedrock versions. Avoid joining a standard release from a Preview or snapshot build.
- “Multiplayer is disabled” appears: Check multiplayer permissions for the Microsoft account, including family settings for a child account. The host should also confirm multiplayer is enabled for that particular world.
- Your friend is missing from Joinable Friends: Confirm you are Minecraft friends, both online, and that the host has started the world.
- Family settings changes do not take effect: Microsoft’s Xbox family and online-safety instructions cover social settings. After changing them, sign out of Minecraft and restart it.
- A LAN world is missing: Check that both devices are on the same network, that the host enabled both multiplayer options, and that the devices support LAN.
- A server connection fails: Recheck the address and port with the server operator, then check internet stability. Minecraft Help also identifies custom DNS and port configuration as possible connection conflicts in its connection troubleshooting guidance.
- You’re joining a Realm: Realms differ from a friend’s locally hosted world: an invited guest does not need the Realm owner to be online.
