You can transfer data to a replacement Switch without the old console only if the data was backed up or uploaded beforehand. For supported games, check Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud using the same Nintendo Account. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a separate island-recovery process. If the old Switch is gone, the game has no usable backup, and no Switch 2 server transfer was prepared, Nintendo’s documented procedures do not provide a way to recover that local save.
First, identify which recovery route applies
| Route | Must the old Switch be available? | Must something have been set up beforehand? | Nintendo Switch Online required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save Data Cloud | No, if a backup is available | An eligible game save must have been backed up | Yes |
| Ordinary user or save-data transfer | Yes; Nintendo’s procedures use both consoles | No prior cloud backup, but both consoles must meet the transfer requirements | Not stated as required by Nintendo’s transfer instructions |
| Switch-to-Switch 2 server transfer | The old Switch must be available to upload the data | Upload must be initiated on the old Switch | Not stated as required by Nintendo’s transfer instructions |
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons island recovery | No, for Nintendo’s lost or faulty console recovery process | The game’s island backup must have been enabled in advance | Yes |
These routes are not interchangeable. A replacement console is a destination, not a source of saves that existed only on a missing Switch. If the old console is merely damaged, first consider whether it can still be operated or repaired; a usable source may allow a standard transfer.
Restore a cloud save on the replacement Switch
Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud can restore a backed-up save for a game that supports the feature. Use the Nintendo Account associated with that save on the replacement console. Cloud-save support is game-specific: a game having online or multiplayer features does not by itself mean its save supports cloud backup. Check Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud compatibility information and the game’s backup status before relying on this route.
- On the replacement Switch, add or select the Nintendo Account associated with the old save.
- Open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Select the relevant user, then choose the game whose save you want to restore.
- Choose the option to download the save data. Menu wording can vary with system software; follow the current on-screen prompt.
- Start the game and confirm that the expected save is present.
A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use Save Data Cloud. Nintendo says cloud backups become unusable after membership ends; its support information says they can be used again if membership resumes within 180 days. Check Nintendo’s current save-data backup guidance for the applicable terms. If the game is not eligible or no backup exists, this route cannot restore its save.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses a separate island backup
Animal Crossing: New Horizons island data is handled differently from ordinary per-user game saves. Its island backup must be enabled in the game before the console is lost or fails. Nintendo’s recovery process is for a lost or faulty console and may require contacting Nintendo; it is not an on-demand transfer that can simply be started on a new Switch after the old one disappears. See Nintendo’s island backup and recovery instructions.
If both consoles are available, Nintendo also provides an island-transfer workflow. That is a separate process from restoring an island backup and requires both consoles; Nintendo says this ordinary island transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Follow the current Animal Crossing support instructions for the situation that applies.

What changes if the replacement is a Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo documents two ways to move data from Switch to Switch 2: a local System Transfer that requires both consoles, and a server-transfer option that can deliver previously uploaded data to the Switch 2 later. The server option is only useful if the old Switch was available to start the upload. Nintendo says that upload process initializes the old Switch, so it is a prepare-beforehand migration, not remote recovery after the console is gone. See Nintendo’s Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer instructions.
Nintendo’s Singapore support page describes uploaded server-transfer data as retained for approximately 364 days before deletion. That period applies to this prepared Switch 2 transfer route, not ordinary Save Data Cloud backups; see the Singapore System Transfer guidance for its terms. Nintendo also confirms that System Transfer can move save data from games that do not support Save Data Cloud, provided the transfer requirements are met.

Why the usual transfer does not work with a missing console
Nintendo’s ordinary user transfer and save-only transfer are console-to-console procedures: both source and destination systems must be available. The procedures also list requirements such as internet access, current system software, and user/account association. A save-only transfer removes the save from the sending console and can overwrite an existing save on the receiving console. Review Nintendo’s user and save-data transfer instructions before starting if both consoles are accessible.
A microSD card is not a substitute for these save-transfer routes. Nintendo’s reviewed instructions do not identify copying a card as a way to recover or move game save data.

If the old Switch is lost or broken, check these details
- Which game? Look up that specific title’s Save Data Cloud compatibility.
- Which Nintendo Account? The replacement needs the account associated with the backup.
- Was a cloud backup made? If not, the cloud route has nothing to download.
- Is it Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Check whether island backup was enabled before the loss and use Nintendo’s special recovery instructions.
- Is the old console still usable? If it can be operated, a standard transfer may still be possible; if not, only a previously prepared recovery route can help.
- Is the destination a Switch 2? A server transfer helps only if the old Switch already uploaded the data.
If none of these routes applies, Nintendo’s documented support procedures do not provide a way to reconstruct an unbacked, local-only save on a new console.
