How you turn off “shaders” in Minecraft depends on what is creating the effect. In Bedrock Edition, change the built-in Vibrant Visuals graphics mode or deactivate a resource pack attached to a world. In Java Edition, shaders are usually controlled by the third-party mod or loader you installed; there is no single universal Minecraft shader menu.
First, identify what is making the game look different
| What you are using | Where to turn it off | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock’s built-in Vibrant Visuals | Settings > Video > Graphics Mode; choose Simple or Fancy | The graphics mode, subject to platform compatibility |
| A Bedrock resource pack | Edit the affected world and remove the pack from its Active resource packs | That world; a Realm’s owner must manage its packs |
| A Java shader pack | Use the controls for the shader mod or loader installed | Depends on that third-party software |
Minecraft calls its official Bedrock visual upgrade Vibrant Visuals. It is a graphics mode, not an add-on. A visual effect that appears only in one world is more likely to come from that world’s resource pack. Java shaders, by contrast, are associated with third-party mods.

Turn off Vibrant Visuals in Bedrock Edition
- If you are in a world, save and exit to the launch screen. Minecraft Help says you cannot change graphics mode while actively playing a world.
- Open Settings > Video.
- Under Graphics Mode, select Simple or Fancy instead of Vibrant Visuals. Available options vary by platform and compatibility.
These steps follow Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals graphics-mode instructions. If the option is missing or grayed out, possible causes include being inside an active world, an incompatible system, or a conflicting add-on, world, or texture pack.
Remove a resource pack from a Bedrock world
Use this route if the effect belongs to one world rather than the game’s overall graphics mode. For a single-player world:

#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Launch Minecraft and choose Play.
- Select the pencil icon beside the world you want to change.
- Open Resource packs > Active.
- Select the pack and choose Remove.
For a Realm, the owner must make the change: open Play > Realms, choose the Realm and Settings, select the world slot and Edit World, then open Resource packs or Behavior packs > Active and deactivate the relevant pack. Minecraft Help gives these procedures in its Bedrock add-on instructions.
Back up before disabling an add-on
Make a backup before removing an add-on pack. Minecraft warns that disabling one can remove its mobs and replace its blocks with default blocks. Some world templates or adventure maps may also require their resource packs. A disabled pack remains in device or account storage; removing it from Active does not necessarily delete it.

Turn off shaders in Java Edition
Java shader controls depend on the shader mod or loader you installed, so first identify that software and use its current in-game controls or documentation to deactivate the active shader pack. Do not look for Bedrock’s Graphics Mode setting: it is not a universal Java shader switch.
Minecraft Help notes that Java mods come from third parties and are not created, reviewed, or endorsed by Mojang Studios; mods can also cause the game to malfunction or become unplayable. Its Java Edition mod guidance does not document a single shader-toggle path for every loader.

If you are turning shaders off to improve performance
For Bedrock, open Settings > Video and switch to Simple or reduce visual effects. Minecraft’s guidance says Simple uses fewer system resources than Fancy, while Vibrant Visuals uses the most. For relevant systems, it also recommends updating Minecraft, the operating system, and Windows graphics drivers. See Minecraft’s Bedrock video-settings guidance and graphics troubleshooting steps.
If the issue seems tied to an add-on, disable packs one at a time to identify the conflict. When multiple packs affect the same asset, changing their order may also help. Minecraft describes these options in its add-on troubleshooting guidance.
