How many Tetris units have been sold?
The Tetris Company reported more than 520 million units sold worldwide in a June 6, 2024 announcement for the game’s 40th anniversary. The company repeated the same threshold in its January 5, 2026 year-in-review; it did not publish a newer exact total there. The 2024 announcement and the 2026 year-in-review are the company’s published figures.
What does the 520 million figure count?
It is a worldwide, franchise-level total. The company’s materials use “units” and “copies,” but do not provide a title-by-title or platform-by-platform breakdown, explain the counting method, or separate paid purchases from free downloads, bundled copies, or repeat purchases. The figure therefore should not be read as an audited tally of paid sales for one edition.
The company’s June 2026 press release says Tetris has a presence on more than 50 platforms. That describes the franchise’s reach, not how many units each platform sold. The official releases reviewed do not include a platform sales table or an independently audited total.

Why has Tetris sold so widely?
Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov in 1984, according to the rights holder. Its long-running availability across platforms helps explain why the reported figure covers a franchise rather than one fixed release. In the 2024 announcement, Tetris CEO Maya Rogers described the game’s appeal as “easy to play and highly intuitive, making it accessible to everyone.”
The franchise also remains active beyond video games. In its 2026 year-in-review, The Tetris Company named Tetris The Board Game, a Spin Master collaboration for two to four players. The company’s current website also lists licensed games, merchandise, and Henk Rogers’s book The Perfect Game: Tetris, From Russia with Love. These current products show continuing licensed activity, but they are not a breakdown of the historical sales total. The official Tetris website lists current games and merchandise.

Can Tetris be ranked against other best-selling games?
Not responsibly from this figure alone. A like-for-like comparison would need to match what is counted—franchise or single game, paid or free, bundled copies, platforms, geography, and reporting date. The company’s headline number is useful for conveying Tetris’s global scale, but it does not establish a directly comparable ranking against another game series.
