For the original Lenovo Legion Go (model family 83E1), the direct-fit upgrade is an M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. Lenovo lists configurations up to 1TB. A shorter M.2 2230 drive is another option, but it needs a compatible extender to reach the mounting point; that approach is documented by a third-party installer, not specified by Lenovo as its recommended configuration.
Choose an SSD that fits the original Legion Go
Lenovo lists the original Legion Go with an M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, with product configurations up to 1TB. That is the straightforward replacement format. A SATA M.2 drive is not equivalent to the listed NVMe interface.
| Upgrade path | Physical fit | Interface and capacity notes |
|---|---|---|
| M.2 2242 NVMe | Direct-fit length for the original Legion Go | Lenovo lists PCIe 4.0 NVMe and configurations up to 1TB. Lenovo product listing |
| M.2 2230 NVMe plus extender | The shorter 2230 drive needs a compatible 2230-to-2242 extender to reach the mounting point | A third-party walkthrough documents this route. It is not established as Lenovo’s recommended configuration. Windows Central installation guide |
Windows Central’s guide describes one individual installation using a 2TB SSD. That example shows what the author installed; it does not establish Lenovo-certified 2TB support across Legion Go devices or configurations.
Check the model generation before buying
These dimensions apply to the original Legion Go, model family 83E1. Lenovo’s Legion Go 2 documentation lists one PCIe Gen4 slot for an M.2 2242 or 2280 drive, so do not use the newer model’s specification to select a part for the original handheld. Check the model number on your device and match it to the relevant Lenovo documentation before ordering. Lenovo Legion Go 2 user guide

Back up or clone the original SSD first
If you want to preserve your Windows installation, games, and setup, prepare a backup or clone before opening the handheld. The Windows Central procedure uses an external NVMe enclosure and disk-cloning software to copy the original drive to the replacement. Choose an enclosure compatible with the drive you are cloning and follow the cloning software’s instructions. The sources cited here document this cloning route; they do not establish a clean-installation procedure.

The steps below summarize the third-party procedure documented by Windows Central, not a substitute for Lenovo’s model-specific service instructions. Lenovo has a removal-and-replacement support page for the 83E1 family, but its accessible text does not provide a step-by-step SSD procedure. If you are not comfortable opening the handheld or handling its battery connection, use a qualified repair provider.
