A Windows Central report published December 28, 2024, described an archive of nearly 100 GB of unreleased Halo development material, spanning Bungie-era games from the original Halo through Halo: Reach, along with early Halo: The Master Chief Collection content. The size and contents are Windows Central’s account, not an official or independently verified inventory.

What the report said was in the Halo leak

Windows Central described the archive as “Almost 100GB” of unreleased and pre-release material. Its examples included the original MacWorld 1999 demo build, cut Halo 3 levels and enemy designs, and additional Halo 2, Halo: Reach, and early MCC material. Those are reported examples, not a complete catalog of the files.

The report framed the material as covering more than two decades of development. That describes the range of eras represented in the account; it does not establish that every year, project, or item from that period is present. The near-100-GB figure is Windows Central’s estimate, not an official measured total.

Was the Halo Digsite team responsible?

Windows Central said the leak “appears to have originated” with someone on the Halo Digsite team. The report described Digsite as fans and modders working with 343 Industries—now Halo Studios—to search internal archives and restore cut content for MCC. It also reported volunteer work and disagreements connected with the project.

The reporting does not establish who released the files or independently verify the reasons for the reported dispute. The apparent connection to Digsite should therefore not be treated as proof that the team, as a whole, leaked the archive or that any particular person did so.

How the leak differs from restored MCC content

Windows Central reported that Digsite had brought cut Halo and Halo 2 E3 demo levels to MCC. That restoration work is distinct from the leaked archive: content made available in a game through restoration is not the same thing as access to files described in the leak. The report does not establish that the archive was authorized for release, and it should not be described as an official release.

What Halo Studios had announced before the report

In October 2024, Halo’s official site announced the studio’s new name and its move to Unreal Engine 5. The post said multiple projects were in development and described Project Foundry as research and a training tool for the studio’s process—not a game or a tech demo. This is background on the studio, not confirmation of the December leak’s size, contents, or source.

In an October 6, 2024 interview with Xbox Wire, Studio Head Pierre Hintze described a new chapter for the series: “If you really break Halo down, there have been two very distinct chapters. Chapter 1 – Bungie. Chapter 2 – 343 Industries. Now, I think we have an audience which is hungry for more. So we’re not just going to try improve the efficiency of development, but change the recipe of how we make Halo games. So, we start a new chapter today.” That statement concerned the studio’s direction, not the later leak.

What remains unconfirmed

The available official studio material does not verify the leak or resolve its provenance. Windows Central’s report is the source for the estimate, named examples, and apparent Digsite connection. It does not establish the leaker’s identity, a complete file inventory, or the reasons behind the reported disagreement.
