To unlock all four Mercenaries in Diablo 4, you need access to the Vessel of Hatred expansion and must progress its main quest until you reach the Mercenary Den. Meet Raheir there, then start separate quests for Varyana, Subo, and Aldkin by interacting with specific objects in the Den.
What you need before you start
Mercenaries are part of Vessel of Hatred. Blizzard’s current product page says Vessel of Hatred is unlocked with any edition of Lord of Hatred; the Diablo IV base game is required. Check the entitlement on your platform and account if the Mercenary Den or its quests are unavailable. Blizzard’s Lord of Hatred page and Xbox Wire’s launch guide describe the expansion relationship and base-game requirement.
Reach the Mercenary Den and recruit Raheir
- Continue the Vessel of Hatred main quest. Mercenaries are introduced through the campaign; follow its objectives until you reach the Mercenary Den.
- Meet Raheir. A current quest walkthrough places the Den introduction during “The Hand Remembers the Blade.” Raheir is the first Mercenary in this progression. Blizzard says he becomes available in combat after completing the Vessel of Hatred campaign. Blizzard’s Mercenaries overview describes the campaign connection; the quest-step detail is covered by Gamer Guides’ unlock walkthrough.
Unlock Varyana, Subo, and Aldkin from the Den
After reaching the Den, interact with each character’s quest lead to begin that Mercenary’s recruitment quest:
- Varyana: Inspect the Brutal Note to start “Slayer’s Retribution.”
- Subo: Inspect the Muddy Letter to start “A Feather on the Scale.”
- Aldkin: Read the Archive of Kuo Chosah to start “A Nameless Mystery.”
Complete each questline to recruit its Mercenary. These object names and quest titles come from the walkthrough rather than an official quest database, so wording or steps may differ if the live game has changed.

In solo play, you can hire one Mercenary as your main companion. You can also assign a different unlocked Mercenary as a reinforcement; that character uses a selected skill when the chosen opportunity or trigger occurs. Blizzard’s feature overview explains these two roles.
